Okay, I am supposed to make enough cake to feed about 30ish people (in less than 24 hours), so I thought I would make two, emmensly decadent round (double decker) choco truffle cakes. Well, the problem is that I ran out of batter to make 2 complete cakes, and I was thinking I would run to the store and purchase an instant cake mix to make up for the second half of the second cake.
See, I got three rounds out of the batter that I made, but I needed 4 (2 rounds per cake). The three are made from scratch, so the fourth, if made from instant cake mix, would be noticeably different.
So, I was thinking... what if I made one triple decker ? Do you think that would feed everybody ? Probably people would be inspired to take less if it looks so tall... right ? I don't know what to do.
Pianistimo ? ... anybody ?

Go with the triple decker. It should look interesting...
By the way, is the cake going to be (From bottom layer)Biggest layer to (Top layer)Smallest? (I don't know how to phrase this :-\)
Are there any fat people eating the cake? ;D

Asking for support to Pianastimo personally makes me jealous.
So you have a cake-problem. How did it came this far ? You're upside-down since you expect some guests, and now you have this whole heap of batter in front of you and you don't know what to do ? Poor girl. Be brave, m1469, if you think you have enough batter for a three-decker then go for it. Otherwise try the double-decker. The two different types of batter isn't necessarily a disaster. Maybe they taste almost the same, maybe the two types will harmoniously match together. You think there could be a relationship between the heigt and the attractivenes of the cake ? (Though 'three-decker' isn't exactly that tall in my eyes). Do you or one of your guests have a phobia for phallic culinary structures ? If that is the case, you better chose a safer shape for the confectionery, for example balls or cubes. If you really start ro feel depressed or hopeless, you can cancel the whole thing in order to think it over. I hope you find relief and help. Don't hesitate to call for support again. We're all here for you.

ok. mayla, i'm all for functionality and ease of cutting the cake. but, you may be a much better cake froster and decorater than i am. the only people who really love my cake talents are my kids. i've gone all out for birthday cakes (once making R-2 D-2, Dora, and other cakes of the like) but, i use other things than frosting for parts of the decoration - to hide my frosting catastrophes. it usually stops and starts (the frosting) and looks very weird compared to store-bought.
here's what i would do. put it all in a lasagne pan (as they are larger than those small cake pans) and frost the top. cut the cake in squares. forget the looks. but, then - 30 people? it would be possible to do it the way you suggested - buying the cake batter and mixing some more. i've had dillemas like this - and believe me - what you really need is a few more hands. to set up and help you with the cake. i know - at moments like this - the hubby just sits there reading a book and occasionally moving in a chair.
usually by the time i have an 'occasion' - i'm 5 minutes before with my hair up and shorts/t-shirt still on. at least my hubby is relaxed and can offer them a drink.
