She thinks I have STDs.
Well, I don't.
But what happened was, we were out for burgers, and the mother got an order of ice cream, but she didn't want to eat it all. So she offers me the spoon to have a bit. Now, since there was only the one spoon, I hesitated a little bit.
She said: "Well, do you have any communicable diseases?"
I said: "Not up here." (Points to mouth)
Her eyes got really wide, and then I pretty much knew I shouldn't have said that. But I mean, I had made jokes before about her daughter's underwear.
But I'm very embarassed. I tried to convince her I don't, but I don't know. I feel so ashamed, regretful, guilty.
But I guess that's one thing you should never say to your girlfriend's mom.

It is part of some cultures to share food in such a manner.
One of my frinds does similar things because thats the way she was brought up in her country, but I always decline until I get another spoon. Also I decline food if someone picks it up with their bear hands from the serving tray and puts it in my direction. I prefer only my hands to touch my food.
I just think some ways of sharing are not hygenic. Dosen't matter if you have something serious like an STD. You could be coming up with a flu, and possibliy pass this on to a unsuspecting person.

Between family members I don't mind. I guess it's a good thing that she offered her own spoon. But my response was a tad inappropriate. I forgot who I was with.
Anybody else have embarassing partner's parents/ mother-in-law stories?

(claps) :D Good one. She should appreciate the humor.

But if she doesn't, it's time to say
"Mrs. mom of my girlfriend I'm sorry about what I said at the Burger Tsar the other day, I was just joking, I guess I have bad taste in humour sometimes. I can understand why you wouldn't think that was very funny. I'm sorry."
Or something to that effect.

And you will look just like that smiley, as you should. :)
You have nothing to lose by doing this and mom is may be expecting an apology from you anyway. Has she talked with her daughter/your girlfriend about this? Uh, I'll bet she has. Maybe you should talk to your girlfried before talking to mom. But you are sorry so tell her. It's the truth. Mom will accept it or she won't, you can't really control that factor.
Good luck with this.

haha "not up here", thats a classic ;D
no but seriously, just talk with the mother.

i think the mother may have been the cause of the discomfort in the first place. i don't think it's polite or respectful to suddenly offer someone food on your own spoon. it seems like an inappropriate intimate gesture that should have been reserved for your girlfriend and you (once you're both tested). what was she doing eating with you two anyways? suppose she wants to get to know you. maybe she should just be direct like i plan to be with my daughter's boyfriends in the future. before a guy can go out with them - i want to have a bit of conversation. not sure what questions i'd ask - but probably generally how they get along with their parents and family. close knit families are a good sign. i don't my daughter a statistic. i'd like a guy to treat her like a sister until they're married. and, i'd hope they'd have a smattering of manners.

Thanks. I talked to her, assured her that there was no possibility I have any... she said: "If I thought you had STDs, you wouldn't be dating my daughter."

1. We had just gone to a memorial type ceremony, and the family went out. I felt obligated to join.
2. She does know me. I've been dating her daughter long enough for that.

:D What if the mother let him take a bite off the spoon and then she replied, "Well you do now."
That's...
Mother "You don't have any communicable diseases do you?"
Boyfriend "Not up here." (takes a bite)
Mother "Well you do now."
:D
