Title: repetoire question

I just met my new piano teacher, and she assigned me pieces that I really have no idea what they are or their difficulty. Any thoughts? Oh, i started last febuary.

Bach - solfeggio
Grieg - Nocturne (Romance)/Butterfly
Mozart - Fantasy in d minor

Fantasy in d minor is grade six acording to a list I have. I'm not sure it it's the right one (It was one of the lyric pieces) but the only grieg piece I could find named butterfly is Grade seven. I can't help you with the Bach one. Did you mean J.S. Bach? Hope this is helpful.

CPE Bach's solfeggieto is grade III according to iowa music teachers association.  perhaps your teacher has something in mind technique-wise.  it's not always terrible to use an easier piece to show some element of technique.  especially if you are a new student - and she is trying to explain something that you might have not gone over with your previous teacher.  i always say - trust the teacher unless something terrible starts going wrong.

if she can explain her reasons, they're probably ok.  now, if she doesn't let you knwo what general level you are at after a year of working to even out everything ...then you might worry.

Bach Solfeggietto is a typical student piece (I don't think it's actually performed in recitals). It's sounds showy but won't be too hard. It will develop finger dexterity (fast scale passages) and good hands interaction.

Grieg Butterfly is a very pretty one. One of the 60 something lyric pieces he wrote. It will help you play chromatic scales and will develop your ability to play fast runs in a delicate and light manner. Might learn combinations of pedals too. I recommand Richter and Grieg's recordings.

Mozart Fantasy in D min is the largest of all three. A bit more challenging than Butterfly I'd say. Many benefits : voicing melodies, fingerwork (diatonic and chromatic scales and arpeggios in the three cadenzas), rythmic coordination between hands etc. I recommend Horszowski's recording.
