Title: Schubert 90 no.3 or Chopin 27 no.2
Post by: wzm on December 06, 2006, 03:57:58 AM
Between these two, which should I learn first?  I want to expand my rep.  By now I've learned too many easily recognizable pieces and want to learn something different.  Although these pieces are well known among pianists, I like the fact that they're obscure enough that the general population hasn't heard them, or if they had, wouldn't make the connection with my playing.  I've sort of been going that direction lately.  Recently I've completed Bach's b flat minor prelude,  Chopin op.28 no.3, and you know I had to learn that Gluck/Sgambatti.

So which way? Chopin or Schubert?

Why not both at the same time? It is true, though, that both pieces are among the most famous/popular pieces of the entire classical piano repertoire. So, you are not really going to extricate yourself from your tendency to learn (very) easily recognizable pieces.

yea they're both famous but joe blow down the street has probably never heard them.  moonlight sonata, claire de lune, maybe even chopin 9-2 etc. are recognizable to a sizeable amount of the population.  See the difference?  Both at the same time might be a good idea... I was just thinking that on the way home from work.

I'm learning the Schubert right now.  It's fun to play and very easy to memorize.  It's also one of the most likeable pieces of music, so it will be a valuable addition to anyone's repertoire.

That's funny. Those were exactly the last 2 pieces I learnt! I did Chopin 27 no 2 first and then the Schubert one. I don't think it makes much difference which one you play first. For the Schubert impromptu it's easier to learn the notes. So, you can start concentrating on making it sound nicely quite soon. It's a bit harder to play Chopin 27/2 without wrong notes. However, I think the main challenge of the Schubert impromptu is to play it with a beautifully singing melody. And that's not easy either!

Shock Horror!! What kind of edition of the Schubert Impromptu is shown here?! G-major? It was written by Schubert in G-flat major, and sounds much better in G-flat.
