Title: An ABC question!
Post by: onemanband on February 06, 2004, 04:24:19 AM
I just accepted a 6 year old kid who never touched piano. Since I have never taught any kind of beginner, I am a little puzzled. I really want to know how to start my first lesson with such a nice kid?
Besides, I want to hear some suggestion on which music score I can pick for this kid?

There are a few books I use:
Leila Fletcher's Piano course Book 1
Boris Berlin's ABC Piano course
Alfred's Piano... (err, forget the full name of this one).

You may try asking him which piece(s) he would like to learn. If he already knows, you can then structure your course to prepare him to play them.

If he does not know which pieces he likes, you can play some for him, and see which attracts his interest.

In my experience, finding a piece a student likes will solve 99% of the usual problems (being bored, not practising, lack of motivation, etc.)

For some suggestions of repertory, have a look at this thread (and if you find some gems, add to it!)
