Title: Concert Programme
Post by: elevateme on January 03, 2007, 05:19:12 AM
What else can I play that will go with Gaspard? I have a 50 minute recital and Gaspard takes up 20 - 25. any contributions would be greatly appreciated

Program (that I would suggest) Chopin B minor Scherzo (7'). A slow piece, perhaps a Field, or even a Debussy or Rach nocturne. I'm talking about 5 minutes long? To kill another 12 minutes I'd suggest a Bach Chaconne. Play Gaspard as a finally. Heres What I'm thinking:

-Chopin B minor Scherzo
-A nocturne of your choice
-Bach Chaconne. May I suggest the D minor one.

Intermission

-Gapard de nuit

ENCORE (if any):

I'd suggest a fast and firey piece. I'm thinking Chopin op.10 no.4 OR Chopin 10/12 OR Chopin 25/12 OR a Liszt transdental etude. Almost any of them would do the trick. Or you could always use a Mosgowsky etude

Keep in mind that these are only suggestions. I wish you luck with your recitle and I hope you take some of my suggestions into mind. But if you ask me this program seems to have a good combination of pieces.

Rachmaninoff Sonata 2, that's what Lugansky did (along with Franck prelude chorale fugue and all the Rachmaninoff moments musicaux btw) .

 Dear Elevate:
Let me give you three sugestions:
 1) to a more conservative recital, you should pick some classical sonata (about 15 minutes) and a romantic work (Chopin, Schumann or Brahms would fit perfectly);
 2) I know that's almost common place, but why not some Debussy to pair with your Ravel? Or any selection of late XIX-early XX french piano music (the nocturnes by Faure, some obscure piece by Satie, Saudades do Brasil by Milhaud...the list is endless)? I heard a recital by Mr. Pizarro this way, and it was pure magic.
 3) if you want to challenge your public, try picking some other contrasting and relevant cycle. Occurs me now Prokofiev's Visions Fugitives, but there are many other.

Just some thoughts. Anyway, if you play "Twinkle twinkle little star" for 30 minutes to fill the program, yet it will be great: Gaspard is such an outstanding, unbeliveable, astonishing masterpiece that goes well with anything. By the way, why not an extended version of Cage's 433?  ;D
 Best to you!

PS: it's not the case, but I did listen to a recital by Mr. Tharaud and he made something really amazing. In the program, there were Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin, and it was played with Couperin pieces between the movements of the former. Creative and very cool.  8)

I was randomly thinking about this the other day, and thought Chopin Bb minor sonata would go. Don't know why, but I think it would be nice. With the funeral march and le gibbet. The Bb minor sonata 1st, and from the last mvt, you'll get applause (hopefully hehe), then it goes silent, and ondine begins. I think it would be cool.

ah, i've just performed Gaspard de la Nuit last month. :)

i played 3 Scarlatti sonatas( K. 525, 380 and 345 ) , then the Brahms Ballads op 10 and then Gaspard.
Not a very long program, but it worked very well.
Ondine sounded especially luminous after the sombre and pensive Brahms.

small piece of advice : make sure in the program notes that there is NO mention of how many times the bell is being heard. Unless you want to hear:  "I only counted 160something... blah blah "...geez.  :o

yes, that is a very nice possibility. Might steal it from you for ulterior performances.. :)

Option one

Stravinsky: 3 movs of Petrouchka
Ravel: Gaspard de al Nuit

Option two

Ravel Sonatine
Ravel Oiseux Tristes
Ravel Alborada del Gracioso
Ravel Gaspard de la nuit

Option three

Chopin, two nocturnes op 62
Britten, Night music
Ravel Gaspard

Option 4 (my favorite)
Read and discuss the Bertrand poems, in original and translation before each piece.  No need for additional music.

Consider a set of variations: anything from Mendelssohn's Variations Serieuses to Brahms Variationen und Fuge über ein Thema von Händel.

Also some of Ligeti's Etudes.

maybe they mean britten's night PIECE?

it seems strange to me that he'd call one thing night piece and the other night music- its pretty unoriginal

night piece definately exists

You guys are all trippin. Romantic repertoire overkill. Imbalanced program.

Take a look at what people play at the SF Symphony. Their programs are balanced. Why don't you just look at them? Recently I saw Murray Perahia perform Bach's Partita No. 2, Beethoven's Pastoral Sonata, Schumann's Fantasiestuck, Chopin's 4th Ballade, and Schubert's Eb impromptu.

See the balance? Why don't you choose something like that.

Some of the suggestions here seem to extend beyond your allotted 50 minutes. you don't say whether there's to be an ingterval, although in 50 minutes there's no need for one.

What about

Carter: Night Fantasies
Ravel:  Gaspard de la Nuit

You'll have your work cut out, but it will be a very rewarding 50 minutes or so!

Best,

Alistair

This is a good choice(did Aimard make you think about it?), but I do strongly doubt that elevateme will like the piece.

A choice could be Scriabin's 1st piano Sonata.

How about...

A Bach Suite (French or English- I prefer English)

A Haydn or early Beethoven Sonata (pick a relatively short one)

Short Intermission

Something short and Russian-flavored (a few Scriabin Etudes or maybe the Bortkiewicz Ballade would work here)

Debussy- pick a couple of the preludes (as much as I would like to hear some of the lesser played ones, La Catedrale Engloutie might be good, since it's got a similar vibe to Ondine in places)

Ravel Gaspard de la Nuit

No encore- after Scarbo who would want one?

Probably a bit longer than what you intended, though.

Phil

i would personally stay away from carter's night fantasies. i, too, have mentioned it before in the past, but i retract those statements now. upon further study, the difficulties just seem to multiply. also, ive heard that håkon austbø has called it one of the msot difficult pieces hes learned, and that man is almost in the league of aimard (who also plays it), id say.

Yep, yep: night-piece.  Didn't mean to confuse anyone.

I like my 4th proposed program best.

Thanks JRE.  You have loads of common sense.  :)

The proposed 4th program is brilliant.

But if you want a full programme, I think there is no need for Debussy, as you already have an impressionist masterpiece(gaspard). I would suggest something loud though.

If you want it balanced, you can follow the traditional programming: Baroque, I would suggest a charming scarlatti sonata which is a very nice way to open a recital; Classical, perhaps a lighter Haydn or Mozart sonata; Romantic (getting nasty here, but Schumann's Toccata is a stunning 1st half ender), or you could play something from Liszt's Years of Pilgrimage or Chopin's Etudes and Scherzos.

I prefer Gaspard to stand by itself in the second part of the recital, but if that's too short..perhaps something russian (how about some Scriabin, Rachmaninoff or Shostakovitch Preludes?).

Lastly, whatever pieces you play, do try not to place another big work before the Gaspard(like famous Sonatas...Appassionata, Prokofiev 7th, Black Mass), it might steal the show(we want the Gaspard to be the highlight here).

 ;)
