Of Chopin Waltz Op. 34 No. 3...

Now I recently heard a performance of this same Waltz, performed by Dong Hyed Lim:

Dong Hyed Lim probably plays it at "the right speed", but don't you think Anda's performance is more beautiful to listen to!?

no.  more suppleness in lim.  i prefer pollini over both - but lim has some 'need for speed' too.  what i think is tempting is to forget that the ear can only listen to a certain speed before it is to hard and fast to take in.  so, we are looking for 'impression.'  the impression of consistency and speed without playing OVERLY fast.  pollini pulls back where necessary.  lim is still going forward in places that he cannot pull back.  so we have a fast ride - but he could get there slower and still have the impression of excellent speed.

jean-jacques thibaudet plays chopin really well, too.

zoltán kocsis and dinu lipatti's waltzes are th only ones youll ever need.
