Title: This might be of some interest...
Post by: jakub_eisenbruk on June 12, 2007, 09:24:52 PM
Hi there.

I was thinking yesterday about several pieces and a question crossed my mind: What do you regard as the weirdest thing in all music? I actually can't think of anything that I would regard as indeed the weirdest thing in all music. Answers of any kind are encouraged to be posted without shame as long as they are the truth, including such ones as "low C".

Jakub Eisenbruk,
Mexico City.

I recommend me.  I'm a very strange person.

Regards,

Daniel.

(If you mean something more abstract, then Stockhausen's Klavierstucke are pretty weird- and no one take offense to that ;).)

The weirdest thing about music is that it exists at all and that for so many people it is such a deeply transporting and desirable invariant of brain activity. Like consciousness itself, the miraculous effect of abstract sound on the brain is a total mystery. In terms of pragmatic living it would seem to be completely useless.

Yes, it's the most mysterious of all arts, and I'd say the most profound also...because of the abstract nature of it.

Music is connected to language in the brain, and it makes one wonder about the possibility it may be a byproduct of a next stage in human evolution - communicating with pitch and ryththm more in actual language.

It has been studied that there is a reason for dance existing - it is a great way to exhibit one's physical superiority over another, and attract a mate.

Perhaps the purpose of music is similar to that, talented musicians are undoubtedly attractive people.

Even if something is proven, it doesn't explain the most overwhelming effect of music on people. It brings to ming the classic Beethoven quote -

'Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy'

After listening to his greatest music, you'd find difficulty disagreeing with that  :)

Maybe John Cage.  Prepared piano.

I vaguely remember some piece that was played on human bones.  That qualifies are weird for me.

La Monte Young's piano pieces for david tudor

Seconded. Also, include some works composed by the dedicatée.

Another one...

The recording of the castrato.  That was a little disturbing actually.  Sounded like an alien.  The voice wasn't male or female.  That was very, very strange.
