Previously we had a version in G-major in our sheet music library but when the PS Urtext version was added (G-flat major) the G-major version was removed.

Why are there 2 versions?  Was it an editor's bad decision?

I've seen some music of popular classical pieces that are transposed from a more difficult key to an easier key (such as Gb to G major) to make it easier to play for the average 'duffer'.

Ya but it sounds completely different in G major...

This impromptu would be even more awkward in G major, me thinks.

The reason I asked is that I seem to remember a professor talking about this piece in a piano rep class... something like the first edition was in G major because the editor thought Gb major was too difficult or something... even though the autograph is in Gb major?

Indeed, but if this was the intention here, it has failed miserably.

Easier to sight read perhaps, but much more difficult to play.

Or at least, it was when i tried it and i count myself as the average duffer ;D.

The editor thought that the public would be scared away from purchasing because of the 6 flats, thus transposed it into G major.
