Here is a decent performance of Rubinstein Op 23 no. 2:
.
Might it instead be Thalberg Op. 26 No. 4?
What do you think?

That is a pretty a good performance of the Rubinstein, i must say. I did used to play this, but i doubt if i could nowadays due to lack of practise.
I have never played the Thalberg, but a quick look a the score indicates that unless you can easily stretch a 10th, it might be physically impossible for some.
On balance, i would say the Thalberg is more difficult (perhaps ultimate), but i no longer have the pianistic equipment to find out.

Alkan op 39 no 11 (the first few pages qualify it imo). Not due to being outrageously difficult, just because it is a much underperformed piece of music. It seems to be one of the minor key Alkan etudes that is totally neglected compared to the others in the set.
