Title: Competition doubt
Post by: franz_ on January 02, 2008, 04:19:31 PM
Hi all

I'm 19, and I would like to do some competitons now. There is a competition next month for all pianostudents from conservatories in my country (there are 4 conservatories in my country) IT's not a very big, or prestigious competitoin, but  I'm just in the first year of conservatory. Should I wait one or two years more, or should I already participate. The competiton is already in february. My program is:

(1st round)
Bach: prelude and fugue in G minor WTCI
Rachmaninoff: Etude Op. 39/5

(2nd round - hopefully :)
Chopin: Scherzo I
Haydn: Sonata 49 Eb (1st mouvmt)
Rachmaninoff: Prelude Op. 23/5

Please give me some advice

I guess the answer is: it all depends. Are you trying to win the competition or simply use it for the experience? Many young students will use such competitions as a way of testing their own skill level, of getting experience in a competitive environment, and as a way of getting outside professional feedback on their performance abilities.

If the expense of such a competition is something you can tolerate I would certainly consider entering it, even if you don't think you can win. Having said that, I must also point out that I am not a very competitive person. When I enter things like this I never do it to beat someone else, just to do the best I can do.

As with all opinions, your mileage may vary.

if your teacher is confident that you can, do it! Even if you don't win you will still learn alot and gain experience

i think it also depends on your country music level... in the conservatories..
in mine for example in the first year you will never be able to play the rach´s prelude n.5. op.23!!!!!!!!
 NO WAY!!
lol

but it´d be great for you to be in one
=)
good luck mate

Why not? Country? :p

i´m from Argentina, and the music education is thought differently...
what i meant is that in your first conservatory year you´ll deal with clementi sonatines, bach preludes, schumann´s pieces, bartok´s mikrokosmos, etc...

no idea of how it could be in your country!

What is your country franz ? You are not really advanced for a 19 yr old conservatory student, but I'd say go for it : motivation to practice + considerable experience even if you have no chance to win!
