Was thinking yesterday about the whole Love vs. Lust thing. . . Most people argue that Love is a deeper, more intimate feeling than Lust - less "superficial." But maybe (one more of Essy's convoluted theories :P) Love is just another manifestation of Lust? I mean, what makes the concept of "Love" any different than that of Lust? Maybe it's just the intangibility. Maybe when you are in "Love" with someone else, you are just Lusting over their Soul, their Being, their Essence, instead of their physical Body. Maybe the only reason Love is considered "Divine" and "Superior" to Lust is because it is not as easily explained as the whole Lust factor. People tend to glorify that which they cannot explain and tend to associate the unexplained with a "Divine, Higher Power." Maybe they are just one and the same? Who is to say that one is less or more than the other? - maybe the fact is that they just ARE.
I guess this stems from a trend that I've noticed in the people around me. They're so afraid of LIVING. They're afraid of admitting that they are indeed human, and they dismiss the basest, most human qualities as "impure" or "un-Christian." I really think that we are put on this Earth to Learn - to Learn about our Humanity as well as to Learn about our Spirituality. One cannot learn by dismissing any part of one's Self.
Thoughts?

I once heard the expression, "falling into boing".
Love is something that happens between two human beings who get to know each other and interact with each other over time, and is not related to "boing" though the "boing" can add some spice to it. Sometimes an initial "boing" can lead to love.

I do think love is something else. I have 'Lust' for alot of women (i tend to blaim evolution :p ), mainly only if they look great. But although that lust counts for alot of nice women, theres only 1 women i always want to be with. I definitely dont think that 'Love' is something magical, it mostly has to do with emotional comfortness i think.
Thats why i think love isnt based, or logical consequense, of lust.

Yeah - I agree - Was just looking from a different perspective. . . lol - half the time I don't even AGREE with anything I dream up :P. Eh, at least I DO dream, I guess ::).
But still - another thought - would you say that one is "more" or "less" than another? I don't think that one can say that.
-
I mean, one is more spiritually fulfilling and one is more physically fulfilling - one is not right or wrong - I just hate it when people dismiss any kind of emotion as Lust - really, if one analyzes what one truly feels, one will acknowledge what it is. . . .
CAN one lust after less-tangible things, such as another's Spirit or Thought? Or is that Love? It's like an addiction - so, technically, it would be Lust . . . or is it Love?
What if it's not conventional AT ALL? What if all of the outside things are deemed "wrong" and all of the odds are stacked up against it. . . Seemingly is Lust, but. . . .
Idk . . . (Lol - THAT much is evident isn't it ::) :P).

Well that depends on how you see it. Lust is 'more' than love in the practical use, that lust is the basis of our evolution after all. But 'Love' is also more than 'lust' since it proves that we have a ratio that (sometimes) can bypass our primary goal: spreading our sperm as much as possible ::)

Well, Essy, sounds like you're around a lot of Christians from what you said. You said they dismiss human qualities as "un-Christian" -- by human qualities you mean lust I suppose.
Well, in reality lust needs to be controlled like all other appetites. We can't gratify lust all the time or bad things happen, just like we can't gratify our desire for food all the time or bad things happen.
Sometimes in Christians' desire control lust and direct it down the proper channels, they end up accidentally sending the message that it's a bad thing.

A thought-provoking question. . .
Lust can mean strong desire, passion in a good or at least amoral sense. But for the sense of this thread, Lust and Love are a world apart. Lust is self-gratifying in nature.
Its essence is to take, to steal.
Love is giving. Between the sexes, it is marked by desire, and perhaps
this is where the confusion lies. To strongly desire, to long for, to yearn, those are very human and indispensable to who we are and to life itself. Even when you find yourself attracted to someone, if you allow that to turn to lust, it will be killing you and cheapening them. But anyone who has ever fallen in love will be aware of the sheer desire for that person.
And passion is the province of love.
-
But anyone who has ever fallen in love will be aware of the sheer desire for that person.
See - that's where the argument lies - I think it's just arguing wording though - I just don't like how people can equate that DESIRE w/ Lust - it's NOT the same.
Erg - bell rang. . .
Will come back and answer in more detail . . . some time ::).

Are you an extreme pessimist by birth, by accident, by education or by personal experience?
Incidentally, we're already several years into that century; has such a monumental sea-change in human interaction since 1 January 2001 actually been noticed by anyone?...
Best,
Alistair

Realist. Hear ye, hear ye. We´re all doomed.

Love exists, you may not have experienced it yet, but it does.

what makes the concept of "Love" any different than that of Lust?
You can Love a parent, a sibling, a friend or a man/women. However you can not have lust for anyone else other than someone who you can get romantically involved with. I guess Lust is mainly a physical attraction.
A man can be in love and not know it for many years, the good news is love is never lost, if not reciprocated it will flow back, purify and soften the heart. Lovely wisely and not like a fool.

I think the problem w/ the Love vs. Lust controversy is the fact that we live in such a sexually dysfunctional society that people confuse any ATTRACTION to another human being as Love or Lust (ie - all of these high school girls who think that they're lesbians just because they're ATTRACTED to another female and think that any ATTRACTION means that they must have sex with them). My generation doesn't realize that a man can Love his fellow man WITHOUT having any sort of physical relationship - they think that everything must be acted out (Hello Heath L. and Jake G.).
It's frustrating.
