I guess for most of us there is a "Ständchen time" when we have to play this wonderful little piece. For me this was in the last couple of weeks and I recorded it today. There are still some wrong notes (I tried three times, then gave up for now :P), but the interpretation itself is more or less what I wanted. BTW, from the video, it looked really dark. I find it harder to play myself when the lighting is less than optimal.

Thanks for your comment, thierry! Actually, the phrasing was also mentioned to me by somebody else. I was not aware of it when playing, but now when listening to the recording, I fully agree with you.

I think such pieces are quite difficult to put across to a listener, because the mood is introspective and almost all of it takes place within a fairly restricted dynamic range, so it is especially important to make the required musical points.
At first I thought the performance was a little understated, but on returning to the video, I liked it a lot more. I think there are a lot of aspects to the interpretation which are very tastefully done when it would be easy to produce some rather kitschy playing instead. Good playing - thanks for posting!

I've always liked this piece a lot. I've seen a variety of arrangements of it, and I've played the supposedly original schubert one. do you happen to have a (public domain) copy of the arrangement you played? I can't seem to find it. thanks. by the way, I liked your recording of it greatly.

Still, some things I would change. Sometimes the tone gets a bit hard when you not uses the left pedal, and make sure the melody-tone gets most melody... When you play the (I think) 6ths it's the 2nd voise get a bit to loud, in my opinion. And i thought i heard some misstakes, but that happens to everyone.

thanks! I'll have fun with it...but it's definitely significantly harder than the transcription I have. guess I shouldn't be surprised since it's from Liszt. :)

Many thanks, ronde. Regarding the mood of the piece, I think we have a similar conception. To me it's really a fine line to sentimentality in that piece, and I prefer those interpretations which convey an introvert (or introspective) mood without exaggerating. Now this may be a bit in contrast to the operatic genre (I hope to dabble there soon as well), where the grand emotions definitely do have a place!! ;D

Thanks, pianisten! Yes, I want to get rid of the mistakes, too (need some more practice....). Regarding the 2nd voice being too loud, it's a good comment and I need to rethink. I did this deliberately in that case because I wanted to emphasize the "duetto" character (in Schubert's original, one of the voices is sung, and one is played by the piano). But I will play around with some alternatives.

I have another in a classical anthology, but not an electronic copy.
so far I like the liszt transcription the best. it's gonna take me some time though, I'm not very good. :)
