Title: Fantasie Impromptu/Moonlight Mov. 3 within reach?

Right now, I'm working on the g minor Rach prelude, and I'm nearly finished with it. I've been playing for about 8 years I think, but I started fairly young, so I've only just started playing more difficult music. The most "difficult" pieces I've played and memorized so far are probably the Chopin Nocturne op 9 no 2 and the first Gerswhin prelude. I'm working on one of the easier Beethoven sonatas right now as well, Op 14 no 1 I think. Do you think it'd be worth it to try to go for the fantasie or moonlight sonata after I'm finished or not?

hi, i've been playing for about 10 years, and can currently play the moonlight sonata and fantasie impromptu and i would say that fantasie is much harder but they use very different techniques.  i would suggest that you start with the moonlight mov.3, but if you feel like a challenge go for the fantasie, it's a seriously impressive piece to play, and if you've played the opus 9 no 2 nocturne you play a similar style in the moderato cantabile section. the moonlight mov 3 is pretty standard beethoven (scales and arpeggios) but it requires a very subtle style to play well.  hope it helps.

Yes go for it. I've been only playing for 4 years and im already starting the 3rd movement of the moonlight sonata.  Its a very fun and impressive piece and i would really reccomend u play it ;D

Fantasie Impromptu isn't that hard, if you compare it to a well played rach 23-5 it is easy. Just play it slow until you know it and don't rush, it will go well. A showoff piece.

Yeah the fantasie can be confusing at first because it's all 16th notes in the right hand over 8th note triplets in the left hand, where as the moonlight 3rd is 16th notes over 8th notes.  Clean cut subdivision.  It's very wierd to listen to the fantasie at a slow speed when learning it, as it doesn't even sound CLOSE to the actual song, but once sped up, it all fits together (Chopin Scherzo no. 1 comes to mind).  But like pseolainen said, just play it slow until you have it down and then speed it up.  It's a really fun piece.  Plus that middle section is one of the most beautiful piano works i've ever heard.  You have to play that section with your heart or else it sounds ugly.

i'd start with the moonlight. in fact i am going to start with the moonlight once im done the first sonata.
