Title: my piano family tree
Post by: njalli on May 30, 2009, 07:47:20 PM
I just found out today something, i know its kindof a 'longshot' but i wanted to share it with you guys.

Beethoven
      l
Czerny
      l
Franz Liszt
      l
Martin krause
      l
Claudio Arrau
      l
Bridgett Wild
      l
My teacher
      l
    Me

so you can see, Wild teached my teacher who was teached by Claudio arrau, who was teached by Martin Krause, who was teached by Franz Liszt, who waz teached by Czerny who was teached by none other than Beethoven.

I bet most of us can go back to Beethoven one way or another. I know I can - I was taught by a guy whose teacher was a pupil of Ravel and I once traced a link back from there. (Actually my teacher in that case wasn't much help to me, ironically!) My wife studied with a pupil of a pupil of Neuhaus. And so on....

It's a bit like that often-quoted bit of data that almost anyone in the world is linked to almost anyone else by at most 5 (or is it 6?) mutual acquaintances.

Well, Beethoven taught Czerny, Czerny taught Liszt, Leschetizsky & Kullak, and they taught just about bleedin everyone.

It would not amaze me if thousands of pianists could trace back their ancestry to a common demoninator.

No doubt, we're all related in some way or another anyway.

I read an article in...i believe Discover magazine, a while back about that study of 6 degrees of separation, and turns out the person who conducted the study failed to include the results of those acquaintances which were greater than 6 degrees, or NONE at all.

... trace back their ancestry to a common demoninator.

Thal

Wouldn't that be a "common demoniser"? Or "demon-initiator"?

Hey, I didn't start about a demoninator! ;D

But think of this one: I once spoke to the mayor here, she'd spoken with our queen who has spoken with just about every king, queen, president and whatnot of the world! So I've come thát close to shaking hands with G.W. Bush!

*starts itching, goes to shower...* ;D

But why stop at Beethoven?  He studied with Neefe who studied with Hiller, who studied with Homilius, who studied with Johann Sebastian Bach.

And we're all descended from Adam and Eve...
