Title: Striking keys "just right"
Post by: tea cup on December 28, 2009, 12:35:00 AM
Maybe it is only me because I'm particular about everything :( but does anyone else like to strike the keys so that it feels right on your fingers? It is hard to explain, but whenever I practice a piece, I also practice pressing the keys, especially two or more keys at once (C and E for instance), precisely, so that it feels... not comfortable, but just "right".

Anyone else do this? :-X

Yeah, sounds like you are working on refining your touch. Playing correctly includes much more than just correct notes and rhythms. It's varying your touch and tone to cause the hammers of the piano to strike in different ways that makes a good pianist.  8)

Yeah I do that too ;). I do it a lot in my lessons as I don't have an acoustic piano only a digital one at home :( so use the opportunity to concentrate on getting the tone right. I sometimes play just the first notes of the piece over to get the sound right before playing the piece fully.

awwwwww, I wish I could aford a real piano! then I could work on refining my touch to get a beautiful tone. :'(

That is also known as "tickling the ivory" or "caressing the keys".

If it's a question of money, don't give up without at least trying to find a piano. These days people often sell old pianos for very little money to someone who's willing to haul them away. Or even free. Keep checking the local paper or craigslist.
