K, i usually don't post much anymore, but I just stumbled on Zimerman playing rachmaninov's first concerto with seiji ozawa...is it just me, or is this one of..ney, THE most brilliant rendition of this piece, both by the orchestra and zimerman himself.
Here is the link to part 2, where the cadenza is..it's insane. I urge everyone to listen to the whole thing

What do you think?

Indeed, this is one of my favorite recordings of this piece ever, and this is coming from someone who grew up on Byron Janis and Rachmaninoff's own recording. Simply stunning in every way. Shame that Zimerman has gone off the mental deep end and we won't be seeing many (or any) disks from him anymore, let alone performances. He is supposedly to retire in 2011.

I heard on a yahoo group. I am not sure if it is completely true, nor if the source is reliable.

Well I think he lives not far from me. I might go and ask him :P

It says so that too on Wikipedia.

If you do, can you ask him to come play down here in South America? :D

If, yes. So he never went to South Amerika?

Not that I know of. In an article from 2007 he said he wanted to, but wasn't able to arrange for the transportation of his piano.

I reckon pletnev is worth a listen. just my opinion

I really dislike Pletnev's playing. It is overly reckless to the point of it being abrasive. He shouldn't even be mentioned next to Zimerman, much less in comparison. He is a decent conductor, though. He should stick to that instead.

If you see him could you ask him about this?
It's a serious question! :D

i also like him... which yahoo group are you talking about?
-
yeah i agree, probably the best recording ever. i also think leif ove andsnes is wonderful, if he didn't commit himself to the plain-as-wood BBC radio orchestra... boston orchestra is just so good :)

Rach 1 is a great concerto.
Although personally I prefer the original version.

Agreed. I learned the original version a few years ago and never regretted learning that one instead. It is simply a great piece to play, although it shows a lot of Arensky's influence. It's great to see what kind of student he was, and what he came from.
