Title: Modern Piece

Hi,

I need a modern piece that is about as hard as the following pieces:
Beehoven Sonata op.10/3
Chopin Nocturne e minor op.posth. 72
Bach Prelude/Fugue e minor WTK I

Do you think the Khachaturian Toccata would be an appropriate piece?
I would still like to hear other recommendations. Maybe a piece from Prokofieff?

Maybe Schoenberg suite op.19, or some Prokofiev visions fugitives.

The Khachaturian is not very difficult and IMHO not very good. For something a bit different that can stand alone, consider "The Alcotts", the 3rd movement of Charles Ives "Concord Sonata". It's an effective and endearing portrait piece and quite a bit less demanding than any of the other movements of the sonata. Stravinsky wrote a few short solo works like "Tango  8) ), Piano-Rag-Music, etc. Prokofiev wrote a lot of piano music, much of it within your difficulty range, that rarely gets played. "Visions Fugatives" are quite like a set of preludes, with a wide range of difficulty, but there are quite a few others that are lesser known, yet still quite good. Good luck!

mmmm, i think the Prokofieff prelude "The Harp" op. 12 no. 7 would fit great there!
if not, also have a look to: debussy prelude minstrels, his arabesques, prokofieff march op. 12 no. 1 (one of my favourites!!), bartok sonatina, and if you want a more challenging piece try rachmaninoff prelude op. 23 no. 6.!

I think I will try Prokofiev. At first I thought maybe Schönerb op.11 Nr. 2 but I think it's too weird..
I' ll try some Visions fugistives (maybe Nr. 11,14,9 ?) or the Scherzo op.12 Nr. 10. What do you think? Is the Scherzo too hard?

It seems that these days "modern" means anything written after 1910 which breaks free of tonality, much like how the cotton gin is still considered a state of the art invention, heh.

i found it a bit harder than the Prokofieff March and also the visions!
from fugitive versions i played for an exam: no. 5, 10, 14 and 17...
