Title: 2years old Yamaha U3 - buzzing sound
Post by: vafasher on June 12, 2010, 04:36:27 PM
Hi

1) One of the string on this brand new 2 years old Yamaha U3 makes a buzzing noise when played and it's quite annoying.

Piano is tuned every 6 months and I just noticed it recently before the last tuning and thought it would go away after it's tuned again. But it didn't go away and now it's even worse.

Has anyone ever experienced this before? Piano's still under warranty by the way.

2) Also, two of the keys seem to have double action. What I mean is that when I press the keys they hit the string twice. Is that a manufacturing problem?

Buzzez are a pain. There are many different causes of buzzes.
The filament or bulb in the piano lamp can vibrate just from one particular note.
Check the music desk for loose screws. The fall board too.
The jacket or copper winding on a bass string is loose. To correct this, the string has to be slackened and with a vice grip, needs to be turned by the loop end one revolution and but back on the hitch pin. More common of a problem than one would think. Bet its that one.
Check real good for any debris.

As for the double strike, that's a regulation problem, not a manufacturers defect, so good luck getting that fixed under warranty. Deregulation happens through normal wear and tear and is only in need of a simple readjustment. If the rest of the actions regulation is good, just get that one note done when you have the piano tuned. Don't worry though, its not a big deal. You're piano is not broken.

Buzzing could be caused by sympathetic vibration.  Might not even be the piano.  Check the entire room: picture frames, flower vases, music stands, jar of pencils, etc.

For double striking call your piano tech, it is likely a minor issue.  This is a common regulation problem in vertical pianos I have played.

Thank you so much for your replies.

As for the buzzing I'm certain it's from the piano. The double action is a regulation indeed apparently. I have a technician coming in this week to check it out. Will post an update then.

Thanks again!
