Title: Too slow or too fast of a progress?
Post by: steponme on July 23, 2010, 05:00:08 AM
Hello everyone,

I was just wondering about what your thoughts are on how fast an intermediate student should learn a particular song. I've just started studying Debussy's Arabesque No. 1 (and still am) about a month ago but I am wondering about whether how long it should take to learn on average. I am just confused about whether I am slacking off or if I am making decent progress. Thank you.  :-[

3-4 months for a very good performance.

As a piano teacher, it depends upon the student and how much practice he/she
puts forth into a piece. I don't know, steponme, how long have you been taking lessons?
It's hard to answer your question here because every student goes at their own pace.  There is no set time limit to learn a piece.
I am familiar with the Debussy's Arabesque No. 1, and if you have the
skills and technique to play through it fairly well, then probably a month or so.
Although, the poly-rhythms is always a challenge for anyone to learn, especially for
an intermediate student.
