Title: Dampp Chasers

I've been looking for a new piano and I've found a nice Kawai Grand but the owner says that it has a Dampp Chaser installed aswell. I get the basic idea of what they do but I'm just a little worried about them having negative effects in the long run, if they do have any at all. Does anybody have any experience with them or know anything about them? I'm assuming that if need be they can be uninstalled quite easily?

Kawai endorses Dampp Chaser and in 34 years, and over 4000 systems installed, I have noted no negative effects compared to unprotected pianos.  You will notice better tuning stability and pitch retention.

I've never heard of any downside to using the Dampp-Chaser system, but it does require attention occasionally.  Water needs to be added when the yellow light flashes (typically every two to three weeks), and the pads should be replaced a couple of times a year as well.  These maintenance routines are relatively easy and inexpensive, and the piano's owner (and, very likely, your own tuner/technician) should be able to tell you what you need to know.

I can't imagine there's any difficulty in uninstalling a unit.  But if you chose not to use it, you could simply not plug it in.  :)

I'd think the tuning stability as a result of such installed system is well worth it. 

The humidity swings this summer has caused my piano to go in and out of tune several times.

I have a Steinway and have had a Dampp Chaser humidifier-dehumidifier system on it for about 10 years.  No problems whatsoever, and it keeps the soundboard from contracting and expanding with differences in temperature in the house.  So it stays better in tune and helps prevent damage to the piano over the long run.  I would recommend it if your piano is in an environment where light may come through windows and heat it up, or any other similar situation.
