Title: Conservatory or teacher??
Post by: thierry13 on August 12, 2004, 04:15:40 AM
This summer, i went to a musical camp not in piano, but there was a piano. A night, i played, and a girl that played for about 10 years came and said that after one year we were at the same level. Of course she's better than me, but that's not the point. She said that i should go to the conservatory, because i would be chosed right now. But i love my teacher, and she's REALLY a great teacher. She's preparing me to go to the university and all the stuff ... but what would be better, keep my teacher and go to university, or only go to the conservatory(i want to become pianist). By the way I just had 15 years old(maybe it can make a difference in the choice).

I live in Montreal too.  8)

Conservatoire de montréal (https://www.mcc.gouv.qc.ca/conservatoire/musique.htm#tableau)

You can have both. Le conservatoire is free and you could have a private teacher.

In a conservatory, you will be exposed to many new things that you will never experience with the teacher.  Some general ones are:
different pianos
different teachers
different students
different environment

There is no reason not to stay with your teacher and go to a conservatory but you should consider going.

I actually know this is nothing, but my parents just paid me a load of new things ( this summer camp 700$, a new digital piano,1000 $, and i have allready another teacher). But yeah 200 per year is real cheap... that is, if it's not free like they said!

200$ is the inscription fees. Public school system yippee.  You pay around 200$ mostly for you books and sheet music I bellieve. I think It's really cheap. If I could I would attend le Conservatoire.

I'm a begginer too, but hey if you really want you can enter conservatory. Depending on your age tough. If you're 13-14 and more, just try and do the pieces that you really love, but that you THINK they are too hard. A little practice, and i'm sure you can make a big jump in one year!

I know it's really cheap. This is really small, same if i continue with my private teacher. But knowing my parents, i'm sure they wouldnt be okay with this  ;D. Stuff like: Ho, you allready have a teacher that's REALLY enough!(they don't know what they're talking about)

Yes, I think it's great to go to a conservatory and keep your private teacher. That's what I'm doing!
