Title: best unexpected tempochanges!
Post by: sevencircles on November 09, 2011, 02:08:21 PM
What are the best examples you know of unexpected and surprising tempochanges (like accelerando etc)  in a recording?

What pianist do you think have the best "feel" when it comes  to tempochanges?

Rachmaninov's Prelude in c-sharp minor. I will think about any other ones.

Best regards, Dr

The only notable recording I have listened to is Rachmaninov's and the tempo change was quite sudden.

Best regards, Dr

I heard the recording, nice. I think there are many better examples though. I especially love strategic accelerandos and deccelerandos.  A good example is the last part of Hilary Hahn´s recording of the Barber concerto. Can´t think of any really good piano examples right now.

The presto in the e minor prelude from WTC1.  Richter does an excellent job

Tastefull, I am more into gradual accelerandos (or deccelerandos) especially combined with dynamic contrasts. That can make even a mediocre piece sound really good.
