Title: Small hands problem... help anyone?
Post by: lousyplayer on May 08, 2012, 02:16:35 PM
Any professionals out there?

My biggest problem has always been that I have really small hands. I was wondering what I should do about it? I have this Albeniz thing that I am trying to grasp with lots of octaves. Can someone help me with what exercises I should do? I found only 2 extensions in Hanon and none in Czerny...

Thanks!

easy fix, try play octaves in piano-soft), the only time you can reduce tension on your hands is playing soft so as your mental state.

Just keep practising is all I can say. I've small hands too, and when I first started piano I found spanning an octave was a lot of trouble and uncomfortable. Practise and constantly "fidgeting" (I'm always moving my fingers, and stretching/relaxing my palms) will do a lot to help. If your span is smaller than 6 inches you'll have major issues, but otherwise you should be fine with the majority of music out there.

I have small hands, and once I started doing chromatic scales I just flew over the keys!;D just like ceapaire said keep practicing. and you will eventually get the grip of going octaves!I did the same. ;D ( don't let your piano forum name get the best of you, you WILL be able to do it if you are willing to practice and stay focused. ;D)
