Title: This is so weird.
Post by: perprocrastinate on September 11, 2012, 09:53:02 PM
Okay, I'm a Chinese-American, born in America. I grew up with parents who spoke Chinese, but I never actually was taught how to speak the language fluently; I only know little simple bits of the language.

Here's the weird part. I've lived all my life pretty much knowing how to speak English fluently, and then suddenly yesterday my friend mentions that I have an accent. Thinking about it, I've noticed video recordings with me talking (over the years, parties, family gatherings, accidentally recording myself with my phone), and I realized that I DO have an accent.

Funny thing is, I BARELY speak Chinese, if at all. :o

I have no idea how this is even possible. This is probably not the case, but I found this to be interesting.

Jeez, this hit me hard. I never actually realized that I HAVE an accent. What's ironic is that I sometimes jokingly speak in Engrish (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engrish) to make fun of some of my relatives. Heh.

You're American. I hate to break it to you, but the whole damn lot of you have accents.  :P

I'm the same. Actually, I don't have an accent, but I can make myself have an accent.  ;)
