Title: The proper tempo for Mozart K.284 last movement
Post by: iratior on March 04, 2013, 12:12:52 AM
What are people's thoughts in re the proper tempo of the last movement of Mozart K.284  (the D major sonata with all the variations in the third movement)?  The Epstein edition I have says 120 quarter notes per minute but that seems more than a tad faster than usual for a piece that's marked by Mozart as having an Andante tempo.

Mozart said "andante", so I'd go with that.  I personally think it's at the livelier end of andante.

As long as your happy with the result, and are happy that it qualifies as andante, go with your own opinion.

No metronomes for Mozart (not invented) and I'd resist the temptation to accept some poncy editor's attempt to rectify that.
