Title: ZUN - UN Owen Was Her
Post by: piano6888 on April 13, 2013, 06:28:45 PM
Here is my piano cover on UN Owen Was Her.  I have played this piece just in the recent months and this is the result.  I am currently just playing the piano as a hobby, though I did take private lessons for 9 years (2 of which were at a conservatory).  I love classical music, but I also love video game music as well! :)

The piano used is a Steinway D at my local music center.  Tell me what you think about my piano playing (technique, musicality, articulation, interpretation, etc.), the sound/video quality, and just things in general would be appreciated. :)

Thanks,

-Henry

I'm just bumping this topic here, it seems like not many people have seen my video here, and I would love to get some feedback on my playing. :)

Touhou is basically a side-scrolling shooter computer game (Danmaku in Japanese) and ZUN (the composer) has done a great job on the composition of the piece. :)
Btw, are there any Touhou fans or anyone familiar with Touhou on pianostreet?

Giving this topic a little bump, and if anyone has any particular constructive criticism regarding my piano playing, feel free to let me know :) (e.g. technique, musicality, tonality, audio quality, and overall playing, etc.)

Piano6888,

I take it UN Owen Was Her is a video game tune...not something many Piano Street members are used to. Your performance is articulate, with some nicely turned phrasing. A few of the transitions are a bit rough, tempo-wise, especially in the first half, but that's a minor quibble.

I can't say I'm deeply moved by the composition itself, which may account for the lack of Piano Street interest. It's not exactly what one would call art music. It sounds to me, frankly, like a TV sound track score. Will it stand the test of time as a solo piece, or will it continue to rely upon the game and concomittant visuals supporting it?

You have a lot of piano experience and ability...maybe you should try your hands on some contemporary piano music, or some Bartok or Debussy, or even some classical or Romantic works. Or some jazz.

I think you would do them justice.

Good luck.

Hey Gvans,

Thanks for the thorough response!  :) Yes, UN Owen Was Her is a video game tune and I do video game pieces because I wanted to combine the classical elements of classical music and apply it to video game music (thus giving it a different flavor/color). Thanks for the constructive musical criticism btw :)

Regarding other piano music, yes I do play other pieces as well (some of my very old videos on my youtube channel, the Mozart Sonata in A Major).  In fact, I'm working on some Beethoven right now and I will have a video of it pretty soon!

Since you mentioned that not many people on Piano Street may take interest on it, do you know of other forums or communities where I can post my video game related covers for others to listen to?

Sorry, can't help you much with other sites. But I'm looking forward to that Beethoven.
