Title: Beethoven Sonata, level of difficulty?
Post by: chopinj on June 07, 2013, 09:28:33 AM
Hi Everyone,
Just wondering what your opinions are on the difficulty level on these two sonatas;
 -Sonata no.6, op.10, no.2
 -Sonata no.17, op.31,no.2
Which one is technically harder than the other? :)

-Sonata no.6, op.21, no.2
 -Sonata no.17, op.10,no.2
You got the numbers mixed up a bit.

No. 6, Op. 10 No. 2
No. 17, Op. 31 No. 2
is what I think you meant.

no 17 is "the tempest" right? i tried the 3rd movement, only got the 1st page done, it seemed difficult but with some percevererance (how do you speall that!?) its fairly doable, but not easy. unsure how it matches up to the one in F Major unfortunately.

with sonatas, when taking into account dynamics, i see beethovens as all being difficult to get right tbh.

Hello,

well, it's really subjective, but for me Op.31 No.2 is more difficult than Op.10 No.2.
Also, in some lists, with all 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas ranked, that have been posted in this forum, Op.31 No.2 is referred as harder than the other one.

Opinions are opinions.
But, for me, and I bet everyone (or no one xD) will agree, Op.10 No.2 is much easier than Op.31 No.2...
Tempest is considered one of the most difficult Beethoven Sonatas - of course it's not compared to the very later ones - and it requires a incredible maturity and musical expression. I'm not saying that Op.10 No.2 doesn't require it, though.
If you compare the movements from these two Sonatas, you'll notice that Tempest is very harder. It's not an "impossible" Sonata, but it will require much study and time. On the other hand, Op.10 No.2 is quite easier and it may be "finished" with much less effort (but it's still a difficult piece, of course; it's not easy!!). I cannot play neither of them. But, facing the facts, Op.31/2 is much more difficult than Op.10/2.
But you may have different opinions if you play both of them... The one's difficulties are different from the other's.
I hope I've helped.
