Hi everyone! So over the summer I like to learn a large scale work that challenges me a lot. The last piece I learned was Chopin's 1st Ballade and that took me exactly one month and three weeks to learn but I'm still working on it obviously. I was thinking maybe the Chopin Fantasie in F Minor. It's a wonderful piece and I think it would be a great challenge over the summer. I'm open to all recommendations. I'd prefer something that's fairly long with a lot of technical and musical challenges present. I'm looking forward to seeing your suggestions!

Hmm...I'm surprised that there wasn't a "joke" next to the Liszt sonata. That is probably the hardest sonata to pull off, after Beethoven Op. 106
I would recommend the 32 C Minor variations. Or you could work on some other Liszt etudes and small scale works in preparation for the Liszt sonatas or Brahms sonata on the list.

How about something by a composer who hasn't been dead since long before you were born?

Paul Kletzki Fantasie
Died 1973, didn't compose after 1942, ands this (his only solo piano work?) is from 1924.

I always improvise/fool around at least 20mins a day, does that count?

No doubt good for you, but doesn't count towards keeping abreast of trends and developments contemporary music unless you improvise in that style (or styles, more correctly).

Liszt sonata isn't as impossible or as hard to pull off as the ones I put joke next too. It's still hard though so please no one get mad at me !

right didn't consider the dates carefully
Hmm no he had some other piano music ie. the preludes are nice
Does it have to be a classical piece I know a splendid concert transcription just published last year that has some super cool momments

Seems there may be more in a box in Texas (https://=https://www.dw.de/texas-project-uncovers-works-by-composers-persecuted-by-the-nazis/a-14918807-1).

That's right! I forgot about what article thanks for reminding me ;D
Oh to op, this is a cool piece lots of modern classical elements wrapped in a delicious fun transcription this the only respectable live video I know off. Tough piece esp that atonal middle section that's sound like a 12 tone fugue . She's a good classical musician too, ie her piazzola colab work is really good

THis is you?!?!?!
Edit
I need to read fully before commenting...

Which reminds me.. (and probably breaks my own suggested rule)...
Hindemith's conception of twelve tone is somewhat different to that of Schoenberg and, IMO, much more melodically friendly.

hah no worries , I'm flattered you might think i am that easy on the eyes haha :P. but she does a fairly decent job on this . I feel she pushes the tempo needlessly at times, it sounds better with a bit more restraint in spots ( at least I like to do that, but I play other sections faster than what she decided but as performers we are allowed to choose no? )
Truth be told it's a neat piece I have played w parts of it but I m a little burned out modern repertoire right now ( my last major 20th century piece chewed me up and poo pooed me out so I couldn't be bothered to finish the thing in right now, i have a terribly short attention span for this sound right now, will probably record something else soon instead ;)
I am on a bit of a classical binge right now though in terms of larger/longer pieces.

Cool!
As for serialism and true atonalism I find that the tighter the form constraints and perhaps stronger rhythmic motifs the less "unlistenable " music gets.
This is a cool one for op to consider as it is a major work and has tons of technical and musical challenges as well
