Hello everyone,
I'm an aspiring pianist and would like to major in music at one of the top 10 music colleges in the US. I'm a bit confused on the repertoire I must choose. I must audition in January 2017. So far, I have:
- Prelude and Fugue in B Minor #24 Book 1 WTC (learnt and memorised)
- Ballade 1- Chopin (just started learning)
- For the classical sonata, I'm thinking of Beethoven's 4th sonata or Mozart's 14th perhaps. What do you guys recommend?
- Étude Op. 10 no. 9 (Is it too easy? - should I be looking to play more challenging etudes?)
- Scriabin- Étude 2 (just started learning)

Whatever you play, play it musically. However, some professors don't care about that as much as virtuosity so they will look down on a Mozart sonata (A prof. from UCLA comes to mind. Arsehole. Don't know if he's still there.)
Anyway, you'll have to look at the schools' specific requirements. Some pieces are often excluded (e.g. Beethoven Op.49.) Others are very specific about Etudes and some etudes are excluded.

I'm applying for Peabody, NEC, Bienen and Michigan.. Could you plesse suggest some contemporary pieces as well? Also, must I try harder Beethoven sonatas?
