Title: Sonatinas in every period?
Post by: 1piano4joe on March 17, 2015, 05:08:56 PM
Hi all,

I only just discovered just now that there are Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century Sonatinas. I apparently, very naively, thought these were strictly classical.

After a perfunctory examination they all sort of like alike to me. What exactly am I missing?

What are the differences in the sonatinas from the different musical periods?

Does the same exact thing happen with sonatas? Okay, I just answered my own question. Chopin wrote sonatas. I did not know that. So, that means Bartok and Debussy probably wrote them too, I guess.

I blame too much practicing and playing and not enough reading, listening and/or research for my ignorance.

And I call myself an intermediate, Joe.

Hi Joe!

I find it sometimes positively awesome, what composers from later times than Clementi (and some others) did while engaging in the genre "Sonatina". Perhaps you would like to give'em a try?

Ravel Sonatine, Gieseking:

Busoni wrote some Sonatinas, too:

e.g. the sixth, pls especially check out for the famous Carmen-themes which appear from ca. 3:30 on! I like that very much!  :)

Ogdon:

Perhaps I subjectively would say these are lively, fresh, and different from the Sonatina-stuff of past centuries.

And maybe, nowadays, since the times of Ravel or Busoni have passed, too, there are Sonatinas, too, by contemporary composers (?) , but I'm not sure, and I perhaps won't like them(?)..

You mentioned Sonatas: Debussy wrote sonatas, but I don't think for piano solo. (?). Bartok wrote a Sonata for 2 pianos and Percussion, and -at least- (?) 1 Sonatina, both of which are on IMSLP, but there are strict copyright-restrictions for countries, pls note!

But there were very very difficult Sonatas by other composers, e.g. by Charles Ives, the "Concord, Mass. - Sonata", (and another one), which are on IMSLP, too, but for (some of) the editions there exist restrictions, too, to which people should obey.

Many greetings from 8_oct!

If anything sonatas were pretty popular for post-romantic composers...

Check out Scriabin and Medtner.

Also check Skalkottas' sonatina!
