Title: Getting prepared for ABRSM level 6 in Theory and level 5 in Piano

Hi everyone,

I am going to get prepared to do the next exams:

Music Theory in level 6
Piano in level 5

I want to prepare myself and also with my teacher's aid in getting the 3 pieces for May next year. I want to buy books, but also I don't want to spend more than I should.

Have you done these exams in the past or are you going to do them?, what do you recommend?

Normally they're done the other way around - Grade 5 theory just before grade 6 practical.  Some of the pieces will be out of copyright - you can download them from IMSLP.

Do exam boards like ABRSM and Trinity let you use downloaded copies, even if it may be out of copyright?  I thought it's their policy to ban photocopies.

I think the idea proposed was to use the downloaded information as preparation, not take illegal copies into the exam. One thing to note is that their syllabus is free on the ABRSM website so you can see in terms of practical what is required each exam.

Exam boards are fine with it so long as they are out of copyright.

  Then in theory anyone could use downloaded music before 20th century.  Are the examiners really going to spend time analysing whether a particular edition which has been scanned and uploaded to the Internet is out of copyright?

No.

edit: from a Trinity syllabus - Candidates must comply with copyright and other intellectual property laws in the country where the exam is taking place.
