Title: Bach Prelude and Fugue C sharp Major Book 1
Post by: daniele1234 on May 11, 2017, 06:17:39 PM
Hello, everyone. Recently, for about 3 weeks sort of on and off, I have been learning Bach's prelude and fugue in c sharp major from book 1. Today, I recorded myself playing this. The acoustic's not great and I didn't have any time to warm up on piano (it was lunchtime concert), but no excuses I will just leave you to listen to it. The prelude is a bit of a mess technically and in fact I even repeated pretty much the whole 2 pages during the concert but managed to sort of 'cover it up'. The fugue is not quite there yet technically as well and with some parts in terms of rhythm, but I hope you will enjoy it and form your own opinions of what you thought. All comments/feedback/criticism/whatever appreciated and thank you for listening.

NOTE: when the page comes up, click the cross button in the top right which asks you to sign up for dropbox. This will then take you straight to the recording.

I loved the Prelude! If there's anything I like about Bach, it's when he is rhythmically driven. Dynamics are something I like as well, but especially the rhythmic drive and articulate nature. The clarity in the Fugue is extremely important, and you maintained it as well as rhythmic drive. Something I struggle with in Bach, especially fugal and contrapuntal writing, is dynamic expression, but it was beautifully evident in the Fugue. Really artistic work.

My edition does not have the repeat you took in the Prelude though, that's the only thing I was curious about. Great work!!

@cometear Thank you so much for your comments and sorry for the such late reply! You're right about the repeat I was really nervous and accidentally repeated the whole 2 opening pages again. Anyway, thank you for your comment.

Hi,
I think you play beautifully, but the tempo is a bit rushed in places, especially in the prelude. Maybe it's your nervousness shining through. Anyway, I also like your rhythmic drive, but the hall sounds like it has a lot of resonance, maybe it would have been a good idea to play a bit slower for clarity's sake?
