Hi all. I'm looking at how I'm playing now and how I was playing a year ago. It feels I should have improved more. It's a whole year, shouldn't you progress a lot!? How much should you improve in a year. Can you give examples of pieces you can play good in the beginning of the year and then more difficult pieces you should play good in the end of the year?

It varies a lot. However, with a really good teacher and with proper effort and dedication, you should be able to progress a lot.
I know this is vague, but the upper limit really depends a lot on your talent and ability to focus and observe.

If it's your first year you should improve a lot, but it may not be obvious.
If it's your 50th year I would think you are probably getting a bit worse, unless you started when you were very young.

Progress is not always visible, but that doesn’t mean you are nit progressing. I would advise not worrying about how fast you are getting ‘there’ but just keep doing the right things.
If you need a good way to measure, start using the RCM piano syllabus as the syllabi is arranged by grade. Keep in mind that you need to be able to musically play more than a couple of pieces in a grade.

I feel like I want to ask the same question, now that I have studied music in university and so on ;D

Thank you all for the encouragements. I still wonder what pieces I should progress too. It's a bit unclear. I don't know if my skill has increased enough the difficulty of the pieces I can play. It feels like I still struggle to much with the scales. For example.

Use the RCM to assess your scales. Each grade level not only lists possible repertoire but the technical requirements gor each grade —. Including how scales should be played.
