Title: Shorter Pieces
Post by: kyle1999 on February 11, 2022, 09:54:15 PM
Hi everyone, I'm pretty brand new to this site but excited to connect with everyone. I'm looking for a beautiful piano solo to play to open a recital I'm giving in a couple months. Ideally the length for the piece would be abut two minutes thirty seconds or under. I really want to explore something contemporary and/or from a lesser known composer, so I would love to hear your suggestions! It doesn't have to be hard or super technical, just something you think is a beautiful piece!

Thanks everyone

Hmm... it really depends what you consider contemporary, "lesser known" and what your skill level is at. I've found Prokofiev's Op. 12 No. 1 "March" to be a lot of fun. It's pretty simple but has a lot of character (it also doesn't seem to be performed much). It's not contemporary but Prokofiev is definitely starting to lean towards some of the chaos and dissonance seen in certain sects of contemporary music. Actually, multiple of the Op. 12 set fit your request so I'd recommend that.

Ligeti etudes also fit the bill, but these are FAR more difficult than the march. I'm guessing if you're at the level required for these pieces you're familiar with them though (at least by name).

However, on second thought I've just realized you asked for beautiful so I don't know if my suggestions fit the bill... considering your time limit maybe looking into some preludes by different composers could be beneficial.

Suddenly remembered this and poorly attempted to recreate it on my piano. Almost certainly in the wrong key but the idea is there. Any help would be greatly appreciated

You should play Elijah Bossenbroek's version of Amazing Grace.

You should probably create your own thread for your question. It sounds like you might be thinking of a piece by Bach whose name eludes me at the moment.

Bach Orchestral suite No. 2 in b minor (solo flute + orch) - last mvt - Badinerie.  Played in wrong key and most of the notes are incorrect - but good attempt just going from memory.

Check out  "Regrets" by Gösta Nystroem. It's a collection of six small pieces in I guess a "contemporary" style - though they were written nearly 100 years ago at this point. Pretty cool :) Here is the first one:

Haha that's great music! Seems pretty tricky to play.
