IS THIS GUY DEAD OR ALIVE? I heard he went mad after a record breakingly slow rendition of Rach2 and died in an institution. Then I heard he died of AIDS. Then I read he's giving a performance sometime soon... Help!

are you serious? he is alive. yes he plays slow and methodical, but still alive.

Alive but retired, last time I heard. I actually heard him play Rachmaninov 2 a few years ago and I found it very good, very profound and original, but nothing to scuff at.
Well ahead of his time, Glen Gould recorded Brahms 1 at a tempo much slower than anything heard in the hayday of the young Fleisher & company. Time has proven him right, with the mainstream now playing the work much closer to his reading than to that common in his day.
I suspect something similar will happen with Pogorelich's. Rachmaninov himself always complained that he played his own music too fast.
Needless to say, the fast parts were not slow. Great virtuoso and great musical mind that Pogorelich.

I see the rumors are flying. I heard he was substituting for Jesus in a Burrito in Mexico.

:o
I do hope he's not dead ... I've got tickets for his concert at the Berlin Philharmonic on April 11th!

I am glad for his good health, but there is no logic behind your reference to the upcoming release of a DG cd. Other upcoming ones include performances by Karajan, Bernstein and other illustrious ghosts.
"I hear dead people...."
