Title: Time Travelling
Post by: alcyone on August 03, 2024, 01:59:38 PM
When I read an account given by one of JS Bach's students, that he had a heavenly time one day, in a lesson, when Bach wasn't in a mood for teaching, he played the entire Well-Tempered Clavier in one go (probably Book 1), how I wish I could time travel there!

If you can time travel, just for once, where and when would you go to listen to music or attend a historical performance?

I would go to a Liszt concert in which he played the Douze Grande Etudes (S. 137) or the Etudes d'Execution Transcendant d'Apres Paganini (S. 140). I've always wondered how he played these "impossible" Etudes.

Yes i would also like to see liszt but i would also like to see Chopin, im not sure who i would pick ( probably liszt because his playing is written to be as simply perfect and chopin on the other end left pianists frustated like thalberg who said after hearing chopin play for a hour or so , "i need to hear some real piano playing" or something like that. I think i would enjoy liszt playing something more melodic aswell, his tone is said to be remarkable, so to hear him play a beethoven sonata would be a joy. Of course there are those like horowitz cortot and of course Stansislav neuhaus whom i would enjoy alot but these are recorded and i would like to see them in person to see how the recording altered the playing. Im not sure if i really believe horowitz could have that dynamic range through just playing with a low stool and flat fingers. I suspect the recording medium has something to do with it. Of course there are people who heard him play but i dont know any!

When Czerny brought young Liszt to Beethoven, Beethoven asked Liszt to play something from WTC. B was impressed of course (L played c# minor)
