Hi there! I have an idea: I have been currently listening to many obscure piano concertos and I found intriguing the fact that there are so many beautiful concertos from all eras waiting to be discovered, so why don't we play a game... Someone will post a brief favourite moment (ranging from half a minute to two minutes, depending on the obscurity) of a piano concerto he'd like (the most obscure the better) and the others will try to find which one it is! This way we could broaden our music horizons! Then, the person who finds the answer would have the opportunity to post their own fragment and so on...
So, what do you say?
If you accept, I already have something to start! :)
-
So, what do you say?
-
You start! My mom doesn't like many concertos, unless the piano is distinguishable. So I have not been very educated on their subject as a kid.
-
I love this idea. May I peak in too? Sounds like fun.
-
Ok, let's start with something very easy.
-
I would be shocked if anyone did not know this.
Rach 2.
Thal
-
Me too! Of course, that was a warm-up! Now something a little more difficult:
After that I will show no mercy again! :D
-
I will man up and admit that I do not know this one. It sounds so familiar but I must resign myself to the fact that my knowledge of concerti is still very noobish I suppose. Anyone who knows? Or perhaps a hint?
-
The second one, I am too lazy to figure out what key it is in. I do not know. Is it Schumann?
-
Is it in e minor? At least the theme is when the orchestra enters, I think.
-
It's not Chopin, is it? I have the score but I have never listened to it :X
-
The clip sounded like e minor to me as well. The only e minor concerto I really know of is Chopin 1 but it didn't jump out at me. Maybe it's a part I just forgot about. I will go listen now and see if perhaps I haven't been paying proper attention. ;D
-
It isn't Chopin 1 then. Man figuring this out is even harder than watching Blues Clues. But it still seams right under my nose.
-
A little difficult, ain't it? ;) You have got the era correct, the key is however wrong... Btw, he is not so obscure a composer... I would say almost as famous as Chopin... And he hasn't got an extensive piano repertoire...
-
Franck? Just a guess, I have only listened to it once, didn't care for it much, but the style sounded similar.
-
No.
-
No.
Maybe you could post something from another movement to help us out a bit :)
-
Ok here you are!
-
I think it is Brahms but right now it is just a guess. I should go listen to some music to find out.
-
You'll never guess this one!
EDIT: Lol whoops, I left the name of it in the file. Reuploading now.
-
Without even listening... Is it *******? :D
Edit:Too late!
Again:I deleted my answer cause I cheated! ;) Let the others find it. Oh, and for mine, the composer knew Brahms well.
-
Hey no fair, my stupidity got the best of me!

Hey, it could happen to anyone! :) Oh, and perprocrastinate did you know that in that specific performance of yours, the violas couldn't keep up with the piano and the other instruments? :D
And please in the meantime let's keep it down to 1 concerto each time!
-

I don't think I have ever heard this one :(
-
Ok here you are!
It is SO familiar but I just can't remember what it is... I think I'll give up...
-

Rach 2.
Thal
Be shocked. I don't like Rachmaninoff. Excuse me while I go hide from a certain fanboy right now.

Wait what? Violas?

Think about the hint I gave in my last post...

No, I'm afraid I don't know. :(

Oh, come on, that's an easy one! ;D It's Alkan's Op.39/10
-
Think about the hint I gave in my last post...
That would only make me think of Dvorak but I am not sure if I have even heard his concerto?
-

Congratulations, that's it! :) :D They are from the first and the third movements' finale respectively! Let me know when you are ready for another challenge!

So either I had heard it or he nicked from someone :)
This game is way too hard for me, I can always remember the music, but never who, where or when ;D
-
I fail. My family is dissappoint. I must seppuku. Blarghh.
-
Haha! :D Do you want to try another round?
-
Why not...
BTW. To get even with you I'd need to figure out which software to use to crop mp3 files. Any suggestions?
-
Let's change era and mood for a while... This one is easy if you have heard it even once!
Oh, and I am using audacity to crop my selections!

Shistakovich, but which one, don't ask...
I only have audacity on my desktop (which I rarely use). I'll have to download it then.
-
Right! It's the second Shostakovich concerto, movement 3.

Except my spelling was a bit off ;D
I really cannot type at all with this stupid mini pc... but it's more handy when surfing in bed than a proper laptop...
I'll install Audacity when I have time and the I'll show you! ;)

Great, I am waiting... :) I won't add any more concertos today, for pianist's sake! :)
-
I'm ready too! Come at me bro! 8)
-
Haven't used Audacity for ages, but I was able to extract a short selection.
I'll be gentle at first, this one is not so difficult, but one of my favorites.
-
If this is your gentleness, I will sure have problems with your future difficult ones! :) I have to admit I haven't ever heard this... I believe it is a second movement... And is it d minor that I am listening to? Any clue about the composer's life? I know it is from the classical or early/middle romantic era but that's all... Well you sure got even. :D
-
If you have not heard it, the you surely should!
Well, some hints:
Yes, it's the 2nd movement. B-minor.
This composer is believed to have influenced Chopin in his early years and one can actually hear some similarities in their concertos.
-
Well I found it without listening... It's Hummel piano concerto 3. I have heard it once in the past... Truly an underrated gem... Excellent choice! :) Now it's my turn again! This is IMO one of the most underrated concertos of all time... See if you can find it!

Oh, one of my favorites too, Moszkovski, op 59 1st mov.
Hmm...Is it my turn?
-
This one is less known I guess, but quite entertaining IMO.
And don't ask me to give hints on the composer, I know absolutely nothing about him ;D
-
Great outin! :) Now about yours... Is it Bache piano concerto in e major?
-
Is it Bache piano concerto in e major?
Who's Bache?
The concerto is E-minor...
EDIT: I actually thought for about 10 seconds that there might be a composer by that name ;D
But you're about 200 years early...
-
That's what everyone replies when they listen about him. He was a very prominent composer of the romantic era, student of Sterndale Bennett. He had written a piano concerto in e major and other compositions, but he died when he was 25 or so years by tuberculosis... Now, the only two composers that come into my mind with e minor are Chopin and Rubinstein... I don't know who else... Is it Rubi 1st? :)

Poor guy :(
Was he the one who composed fugues and variations in all keys with bad temperament?

Nope... Actually I do know one thing about the composer, he studied with Liszt...

No, seriously he exists!! :D If you can't find him in google it's due to the fact that 100 and something years before him lived a little plumb man who didn't have anyhting else to do than write preludes and fuges all day long. He even lacked the letter e from his name!!! ;D ;D ;D
Now, I have to admit that you beat me this time... There are so many composers that studied with Liszt... Is there a wiki page about him?
-
It's pass my bed time, if we don't get a winner by tomorrow, I'll let you know :)
-
Ok, it's long till tomorrow morning... And tomorrow is first day at school again... :(
-
I think I've got it now... Is it Sauer piano concerto 1? :)
-

Yes! You win! :D
So back to school? Would be sorry for you if I didn't only have 3 weeks vacation on the summer myself >:(
-
Haha that's right! :) Well, I have to listen to that concerto... It's pretty good... Now let's try this one. If you're British you'll find it easy... ;)
-

I'm not British and I am at work with no sound...have to wait until later...
I wonder if I really have many more to put into this game. They are either too obscure, so almost impossible, or too easy. How about expanding to sonatas or chamber music? :)

We could indeed expand it to sonatas great idea! But first try to find this one!

I'd need to listen through a bunch of concertos I guess to find this one :(
And if your hints points to a British composer, the only ones I have even heard are by Field... Someone else must take this one....

Haha, you unlucky! It is obscure indeed...
-
I'm not sure I like this game anymore :(
But anyway, since the concertos are getting a bit obscure, here's a sonata for you :)
-
No idea -for the concerto -could be Walton, Bridge or Coates I suppose
-
Oh, a violin sonata, isn't it? From the romantic period?
-
Oh, a violin sonata, isn't it? From the romantic period?
Romantic yes, but you need to clean your ears, it's a cello ::)
-
Oh god... it's because I was about to sleep... ;D I'll search for it!
-
It's time I brought this topic back to life! :P
Outin, I haven't been able to spot your cello sonata... Any hints about it? Is it in a major?
-

That's Grieg! I love this movement! :)

Hi there! Bringing the topic back to life... Does anybody want to upload anything? It can be anything you want!

Don't know if I can do this game anymore...one year older and my memory is decaying faster and faster ;)
