Title: Let's play a game!
Post by: jimf on August 29, 2012, 09:41:53 PM
Hi there! I have an idea: I have been currently listening to many obscure piano concertos and I found intriguing the fact that there are so many beautiful concertos from all eras waiting to be discovered, so why don't we play a game... Someone will post a brief favourite moment (ranging from half a minute to two minutes, depending on the obscurity) of a piano concerto he'd like (the most obscure the better) and the others will try to find which one it is! This way we could broaden our music horizons! Then, the person who finds the answer would have the opportunity to post their own fragment and so on...
So, what do you say?
If you accept, I already have something to start! :)

You start! My mom doesn't like many concertos, unless the piano is distinguishable. So I have not been very educated on their subject as a kid.

I love this idea.  May I peak in too?  Sounds like fun.

Ok, let's start with something very easy.

I would be shocked if anyone did not know this.

Rach 2.

Me too! Of course, that was a warm-up! Now something a little more difficult:
After that I will show no mercy again!  :D

I will man up and admit that I do not know this one.  It sounds so familiar but I must resign myself to the fact that my knowledge of concerti is still very noobish I suppose.  Anyone who knows? Or perhaps a hint?
Title: Re: Let's play a game!
Post by: chopin2015 on September 09, 2012, 02:45:28 AM
The second one, I am too lazy to figure out what key it is in. I do not know. Is it Schumann?
Title: Re: Let's play a game!

Is it in e minor?  At least the theme is when the orchestra enters, I think.

Post by: chopin2015 on September 09, 2012, 02:59:22 AM
It's not Chopin, is it? I have the score but I have never listened to it :X
Title: Re: Let's play a game!
Post by: tchristec on September 09, 2012, 04:15:42 AM
The clip sounded like e minor to me as well.  The only e minor concerto I really know of is Chopin 1 but it didn't jump out at me.  Maybe it's a part I just forgot about.  I will go listen now and see if perhaps I haven't been paying proper attention.  ;D
Title: Re: Let's play a game!

It isn't Chopin 1 then. Man figuring this out is even harder than watching Blues Clues. But it still seams right under my nose.
Title: Re: Let's play a game!
Post by: jimf on September 09, 2012, 08:50:03 AM
A little difficult, ain't it?  ;) You have got the era correct, the key is however wrong... Btw, he is not so obscure a composer... I would say almost as famous as Chopin... And he hasn't got an extensive piano repertoire...

Franck? Just a guess, I have only listened to it once, didn't care for it much, but the style sounded similar.

Edit:Too late!
Again:I deleted my answer cause I cheated!  ;) Let the others find it. Oh, and for mine, the composer knew Brahms well.

Hey, it could happen to anyone!  :) Oh, and perprocrastinate did you know that in that specific performance of yours, the violas couldn't keep up with the piano and the other instruments?  :D
And please in the meantime let's keep it down to 1 concerto each time!

Shistakovich, but which one, don't ask...

I only have audacity on my desktop (which I rarely use). I'll have to download it then.

Haven't used Audacity for ages, but I was able to extract a short selection.

I'll be gentle at first, this one is not so difficult, but one of my favorites.
Title: Re: Let's play a game!
Post by: jimf on September 09, 2012, 11:47:44 PM
If this is your gentleness, I will sure have problems with your future difficult ones!  :) I have to admit I haven't ever heard this... I believe it is a second movement... And is it d minor that I am listening to? Any clue about the composer's life? I know it is from the classical or early/middle romantic era but that's all... Well you sure got even.  :D
Title: Re: Let's play a game!
Post by: outin on September 10, 2012, 02:24:39 AM
If you have not heard it, the you surely should!

Well, some hints:
Yes, it's the 2nd movement. B-minor.
This composer is believed to have influenced Chopin in his early years and one can actually hear some similarities in their concertos.

Well I found it without listening... It's Hummel piano concerto 3. I have heard it once in the past... Truly an underrated gem... Excellent choice!  :) Now it's my turn again! This is IMO one of the most underrated concertos of all time... See if you can find it!

Hmm...Is it my turn?

And don't ask me to give hints on the composer, I know absolutely nothing about him  ;D

Is it Bache piano concerto in e major?

Who's Bache?

The concerto is E-minor...

EDIT: I actually thought for about 10 seconds that there might be a composer by that name  ;D
But you're about 200 years early...

That's what everyone replies when they listen about him. He was a very prominent composer of the romantic era, student of Sterndale Bennett. He had written a piano concerto in e major and other compositions, but he died when he was 25 or so years by tuberculosis... Now, the only two composers that come into my mind with e minor are Chopin and Rubinstein... I don't know who else... Is it Rubi 1st?  :)

Poor guy :(

Was he the one who composed fugues and variations in all keys with bad temperament?

Nope... Actually I do know one thing about the composer, he studied with Liszt...

No, seriously he exists!!  :D If you can't find him in google it's due to the fact that 100 and something years before him lived a little plumb man who didn't have anyhting else to do than write preludes and fuges all day long. He even lacked the letter e from his name!!!  ;D ;D ;D
Now, I have to admit that you beat me this time... There are so many composers that studied with Liszt... Is there a wiki page about him?

I'm not British and I am at work with no sound...have to wait until later...

I wonder if I really have many more to put into this game. They are either too obscure, so almost impossible, or too easy. How about expanding to sonatas or chamber music? :)
