Title: Practice! Who needs practice?
Post by: TicTacDuck on March 25, 2003, 02:30:44 AM
Hello everyone! Right now I'm teaching a 9 year old using the Faber and Faber primer level. She's a sweetheart and had her mom not said anything I would think she was progressing well, however, her mother has informed me that she only practices 10 minutes per week. This week I made a deal with her about practicing and if she practices than she gets to play a duet with me. She's a pretty talented musician but she needs to practice so I can advance her, etc. What are soem motivations you use for beginning students? Any tips, ideas?

there is a GREAT site for teachers that I recently found... It's www.practicespot.com and it has articles, and online resources for theory, etc. You can even build a website for your studio with a personal page for each student! There were several articles on the page that talked about how to get children to practice!

Love,

Sarah

Some kids don't need that much practice (don't tell the parents that).  If she plays well, then I say no problem.  Try giving her more songs. Try a "project song" that's above her ability level, and try to work a little at it each week, supplemental to lessons.
