Well I just got to thinking..... between the THOUSANDS of members of this website I bet we can play the complete beethoven sonatas.  So let's get to it!  One person, whomever starts.... oh say me.... will write down any of the Beethoven sonatas they can play WELL, with his/ner SN next to it, by writing the number and then either the name and/or the opus.

No. 14- "Moonlight"----------Pokeythepenguin
No. 21- "Waldstein"----------Pokeythepenguin
No. 30- Op. 109--------------Pokeythepenguin

then the next person... oh we'll say steinwayguy, would copy/paste the list onto his post and add to it like this:

No. 4- Op. 7------------------Steinwayguy
No. 14- "Moonlight"----------Pokeythepenguin
No. 21- "Waldstein"----------Pokeythepenguin
No. 30- Op. 109--------------Pokeythepenguin

until the complete beethoven sonatas are posted.  I'm sure we can do it ^^  I'll go first:

No. 14- "Moonlight"----------Pokeythepenguin
No. 21- "Waldstein"----------Pokeythepenguin
No. 30- Op. 109--------------Pokeythepenguin

do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

oh oh, I played Op.22, I learnt that at my 2nd year at university, but hated it back then, i picked up again late last year and think its really a wonderful piece, just the 1st and the 2nd mvt so far though, so I didnt add to the list.

Actually, if we're allowed to add our names to sonatas already named:

No. 1- Op. 2 No. 1 -------------------------------Rach3

No. 5- Op. 10 No. 1 -----------------------------Rach3, eusebius27
No. 6- Op. 10 No. 2 -----------------------------SteinwayGuy
No. 7- Op. 10 No. 3 -----------------------------pianonut, mlsmithz
No. 8- Op. 13 "Pathetique" -------------------vaiva
No. 9- Op. 14 No. 1 -----------------------------TheHammer
No. 12 - Op. 26 ----------------------------------sharon_f, eusebius27
No. 13- Op. 27 No. 1 ---------------------------Tash, mlsmithz
No. 14- Op. 27 No. 2 "Moonlight" ------------Pokeythepenguin
No. 15- Op. 28 "Pastoral" ---------------------SteinwayGuy, mlsmithz
No. 17- Op. 31 No. 2 "Tempest" -------------pianonut
No. 18- Op. 31 No. 3 "Hunt" ------------------mlsmithz, eusebius27
No. 19- Op. 49 No.1 ----------------------------eusebius27
No. 20- Op. 49 No. 2 ---------------------------TheHammer, eusebius27, mlsmithz
No. 21- Op. 53 "Waldstein" -------------------Pokeythepenguin and pianonut ONLY XD
No. 23- Op. 57 "Appassionata" --------------TheHammer, eusebius27
No. 24- Op. 78 -----------------------------------vaiva
No. 25- Op. 79 -----------------------------------pianonut, eusebius27

There are several others I can play reasonably well, but as I haven't learned them formally, "reasonably well" might be to my ears only.

Well, I'm willing to learn opus 90 for the sake of this list, so I might just do it!

I already play more than one page of the Hammerklavier! Write me down for page #1.

I've played Moonlight and Pathetique, and I just got the music to Waldstein to tackle it (my favorite to listen to).

Personally, I found the Pathetique relatively easy to learn and play.  For those who have played multiple Sonatas -- how does the Pathetique compare in difficulty to the others?

I've decided to make it my mission to learn all of them . . . .
It's not easy being Green...

6 missing yet! (we never get someone who played op.54....). Hey rach334, so you play the Op.111, how many others have you played of them? (Not doubting that you can play it, just curious when someone would actually tackle it, considering "experience" with Beethoven sonatas)

I've decided to make it my mission to learn all of them . . . .

Although this is off-topic, I think in a thread of Skeptopatamus this is allowed...
Besides several other threads on the subject of difficulty of all Beethoven sonatas, there are two general opinions on the Pathetique:
Most people say it is one of the ten easiest, that is, certainly harder than op.49, op. 79 and op.14, but then that's it (probably some of op.10 are comparable).
Nah, however, some say that especially the broken octaves in the first movement and the staccato double thingys in the right hand give this sonata a special difficulties considering an accurate performance. In other words, it is quite easy to play this sonata well, but it is hellishly (?) difficult to play it very well. I think Rach3 has something to say on this. Nevertheless, since this is the only problem, and the moment you mastered this octaves you mastered the sonata (for me at least), overall I think it does not "deserve" to be in the upper half of the 32 (neither in difficulty nor in quality, if you ask me).
So, if you want to play the really hard stuff, Waldstein is a good step (but perhaps a far step, personally I would always recommend to play one of op.31 (the third the third!) because it will introduce you perfectly into the "new style" of Beethoven sonata writing, and the op. 31 is just one notch below the Waldstein in terms of difficulty), because it is most certainly one of the Top 10. Make sure you search the forum for this piece, and begin practice at the Presto of the 3rd mov.
Good luck

I have a strong background in Bach (especially his partitas) along with Beethoven's Appassionata Op. 57, Sonata Quasi Fantasia Op. 27 no 1, and his Sonata op. 2 no. 3.
My teacher says that these pieces are vital to understanding some of the aspects of that sonata (the Bach she says helps you understand every piece ever written, don't really know why but I love his music all same ) and she also said that I already have enough of a understanding of this sonata to, what she believed to be, a very decent interpretation. And no its not so steller that it would beat anyone else's of course not but she says that It was a very intersting interp. so I don't really care if any believes that I have the ability to play it or not, at least I can sit down a play and at least entertain myself with this outstanding sonata.

btw I play a little rachmaninoff, his etude op. 33-8, his preludes  3-2 23-1 32-10 and she says that these helped me establish the passion in this piece. And for the jazz in there (yes there is many segments of a jazz-like quality) all I have to do is listen to my dad play the saxophone to help me out.

do we have to have actually fully properly learnt the sonata? cos i can put op.14 no.2 if not, like i learnt the first movement fully and then sort of messed around with the other 2...but nobody else has got it so if you're desperate!!

jazz?  >:(

Yes, Jazz. Most of Rachmaninoff's works have a very strong Jazz influence. Take the 2nd Piano Concerto for instance, possibly the most obvious example. Living in the '20s, '30s, and '40s, it makes perfect sense that Jazz would have an effect in his music.
