Uh, is that a good  thing when we're talking about the Chopin Etudes?   ;D

Actually Perahia is one of my favorite pianists, but I think I like Pollini's Etudes a bit more.

If we're talking etudes only, then definitely Pollini.

Pollini for the etudes, Perahia for the ballades.

I don't care for either set to be honest. Technically there are no real complaints; and with the amount of editing you'd bloody well hope not. Still the intepretations left me cold, which is something that I've come to expect from these two pianists. I greatly prefer Cortot's recordings.

then you might not like gavrilov....

gavrilov has the fastest winterwind etude ever recorded.

another thing to check out is a live recording of op25 with sokolov, stunning playing.

I think it is a good thing. I love the interpretations. Most of the time I am out by 10/7 or 8. I just love the set.

true, I just got that set. He is definately more fiery. He doesn't sound as clean as times, but really plays it with a lisztian power.

trust me, hes as clean as perahia, and his technique dwarfs both perahia's and pollini's.

the reason it sounds that way is because of the botched mastering job apparently.

I only heard Pollini and Perahia's recordings, and of those I much prefer Pollini's. It has more sparkle and excitement (in my opinion).
It all happens on Discworld, where greed and ignorance influence human behavior... and perfectly ordinary people occasionally act like raving idiots.

A world, in short, totally unlike our own.

I could see that. At times it almost sounds as if he decided not retake a certain section. Not that he couldn't play it better, but for whatever reason didn't.

Between these two Perhaia, although it's sort of uninspired for him. I cannot abide Pollini's Chopin, except for that old E minor Concerto.

I enjoy the recordings by Agustin Anievas and Louis Lortie.

Between Pollini and Perahia, I prefer Pollini, an homogeneous Chopin.

Between Pollini and Gavrilov, I prefer Gavrilov, beyond-description technique and passion displayed.

Berezovsky  perhaps the most elegant and sensitive. The first who invites me to play op 10 n 3... the others just invite me listen.

Juana Zayas extraordinary technique pure passion.

Pogorelich and Horowitz haven't a complete set...and Freire only op 25...unfortunately...

If I had to choose only one set, perhaps I would prefer  Guiomar Novaes, Chopin Etudes- 3Cd set,  with the Nocturnes and Sonata op 35 (both peerless)...but Arrau seduces me...

My favorite individual  interpretations of the etudes would be, in  order:

10/1 - Earl Wild; Argerich
10/2 - Arrau
10/3 - Berezovsky (peerless)
10/4 - Horowitz
10/5 - Cortot (peerless)
10/6 - Guiomar Novaes (peerless)
10/7 - Guiomar Novaes
10/8 - Berezovsky; Pogorelich
10/9 - Cziffra
10/10 - Cziffra,Cortot
10/11 - Cziffra
10/12 - Cziffra,Horowitz, Arrau

25/1 - Guiomar Novaes
25/2 - Berezovsky; Nelson Freire; Cortot
25/3 - Cortot (peerless)
25/4 - Berezovsky
25/5 - Ashkenazy; Cortot, both peerless
25/6 - Pletnev; Gavrilov; Arrau; Juana Zayas
25/7 - Nelson Freire; Cortot
25/8 - Guiomar Novaes; Earl Wild; both of them play the bass peerless.
25/9 - Ashkenazy
25/10 - Gavrilov; Berezovsky; Nelson Freire
25/11 - Nelson Freire; Berezovsky
25/12 - Shura Cherkassky and  Berezovsky, both peerless; Backhaus; Gavrilov

Trois nouvelles études : Nelson Freire
No. 1 in f minor (Andantino)
No. 2 in A-flat (Allegretto)
No. 3 in D-flat (Allegretto)

this sounds believable.  perahia is really great at mozart but i haven't listened to much of his chopin.  pollini is super fast and light. but, there are so many more.  having a broader range than just one or two pianists - but separating the performances like this is much more detailed.  it gives a little insight into interpretation of each particular piece.

Sorry for two omissions!!!

Josef Levhinne, equal score to Pletnev in op 25 n 6!

And Josef Hofmann peerless op 25 n 9! excuse me Ashkenazy...

Has anyone heard Yundi Li's op.10 no.5? I liked it a lot. Very vivace, as the marking asks for. He also shows great control over his dynamics.

I haven't heard either of them, though I've heard about 4 others. I think John Browning is my favorite performer for all of them, and I like some of Cziffra's a lot.

Why has no one mentioned John Browning?
