what? no right notes, rythm, half of it is improvised...he cant even read notes for gods sake

Yeah, that guy must be joking or something. I really had to laugh when that part came that he plays for a few people (I wonder what those people were thinking... Or maybe they're deaf or something).

 :-\

8 year old girl amazed jury and audience

With her little body and small hands,an eight-year-old-girl exhibited outstanding maturity and infinite musical talent. She, Miss Aimi Kobayashi won at the grade under 15 years old(Jr.G grade), leaving other participants far behind.
At the final round, she performed Beethoven Sonata No.10-1, Chopin Etude op.25-2 and Nocturne. Her music was really coming from inside, and was expressed thoroughly on the piano. The Chief Jury, Prof.Mieko Harimoto(head professor of piano faclulty, Tokyo Music College) addressed "Construction of Beethoven Sonata, concentration to play the 3rd movement without any disruption, was remarkable. And her technique was really proficient." Prof.Yoheved Kaplinsky (head professor of Juilliard School) who also served as an adjudicator of Jr.G grade, praised her distinguished talent and maturity which was well beyond the expectation.
The emergence of this little pianist is not by chance. Prof.Harimoto analyzed that the development of educational materials for young piano learners are greatly dedicated. For instance, the assistant pedaling system has been developed, so that even young children under 140cm can play with sensitive and natural pedaling. This was invented by one of the PTNA members, whose idea was based upon researches and experiments over 10 years.
The efforts to make better education materials helps the innovation of piano study in Japan.
Ms.Kobayashi will play in Paris next March with three other Japanese young pianists.

Mildly.

He learned the piece with more care and detail than some of the older people who posted the same piece on YouTube.  I'd say he had a very good work ethic when tackling the piece.

When i was watching this, it made me think of that "black pianists" thread  :P.Well anyway this man plays HR6, now i havent heard any good perf's of this piece except the one by Cziffra ;D, but i think this guy does an excellent job, the sound quality is a lil distorded some and i think there a few bum notes in there near the end but so what wrong notes are allowed on a piece like this :P ::)..I wonder what that rest of you think?

I think there are plenty of other videos on youtube that are just as indicative of what the state of piano teaching is at - at least for the vast majority of folk who have a desire to learn.

If he could find someone good, but ime that's as big an "if" that he may as well have soldiered on and saved his money than given it to one of the teachers teaching some of those guys posting on the same site.

Wow! I would have been impressed eben if he'd been playing for 6 years. The cadenzas are a bit slow, but it was still an amazing performance.

ligeti - l'escalier du diable - greg anderson. this guy has some nice effects and i like his intro, haha. it rivals libetta's video, which i posted a while ago. this will blow your mind. well worth watching.

i also like this intro he gave for it on his website:

"Etude No. 13 - "The Devil's Staircase," composed by the late Gyorgy Ligeti, presents a not-so-subtle vision of hell. The pianist and the listeners embark upon an endless quest to climb the staircases out of hell. The harder and faster you climb, the more hell sucks you back in."

dont feel bad.  being a young asian pianist is a bad thing in the same way you think it it a good thing.

compared to the number of young asian pianists, there are very few well known asian concert pianists.  imo, they usually have the discipline to perform technically well, but along the line they forget why they want to play piano in the first place.  and then they all become medical doctors with clean-cut hairstyles.
