Liszt 1837 edition TE no 6
on: February 15, 2021, 05:19:06 PM
The precursor of the final 1851 version which we know today as Vision. The 1837 version has additional obstacles for the pianist, not least the fact that the opening declamation is set for left hand only. Sheet music video. There are a few splices in this, not least because I've not memorised it yet thus am page turning for myself - it is a piece I'm considering for future performance.

Ugh, looks really difficult, good job :D The main thing that stood out to me was that I think you need to make the notes with the accents (the melody) sing out more in the texture, and to keep them really legato even though there is all this other stuff going on around them, so that we as listeners can really follow the melodic line easily at all times. I think this means accenting the melody more (the top note of the chords), binding its sounds together more, while playing the fast parts a bit softer to compensate, and shaping it more. I would practise just the melodic part without the fast stuff. Make sure you know at all times where the phrasing slurs had been for these melody notes, had Liszt written them out.

I think you probably have a point about the melodic notes, particularly in the quieter sections. The lh only part was where I felt I had least control and a few of the figurations are a touch shaky.

You do pick the nice easy pieces lol.

I prefer many of the 1837 versions, especially the 10th.

You have just about got it. Just a bit of polish.

Bravo.

Yes, there are some nice things in the 1837 versions. I've looked at 4, 7 and 12 with varying levels of seriousness. While this isn't fully ready yet, I'd probably be prepared to give it a public outing at some point. I do struggle a bit with the opening, which really is just obstructive.

What fingerings are you using for the opening chords + arpeggios? It's a bit hard to see in the video.

I changed my opening fingerings just prior to this video, so it is possible an old version crept into the odd arpeggio!
But bar 1 arpeggios all low bass note 5 then 1531351
