Remembering the great Maurizio Pollini
Legendary pianist Maurizio Pollini defined modern piano playing through a combination of virtuosity of the highest degree, a complete sense of musical purpose and commitment that works in complete control of the virtuosity. His passing was announced by Milan’s La Scala opera house on March 23. Read more >>

What's on your mind now?
on: March 31, 2005, 01:26:03 AM
Like the "What are you listening to right now" thread...

What's the most pressing concern on your mind at the moment?

Things you are working on now, things you "must remember to do today or this week,"  etc.  not necessarily piano.

I don't have any "pressing concerns" as such - usually avoid them. I'm wondering whether I shall finish the last inch or so of brandy in the bottle at home tonight but I've more or less decided I can't be bothered. I was toying with the idea of exercising again tonight but as I trained the last two nights I can't be bothered with that either. I was wondering about calling into the shops on the way home but I can't be bothered with that. No good thinking about what to play tonight because the piano's action is still away being rebuilt. Could continue with the algorithmic composition programme I suppose but on the other hand I might not bother.

Perhaps I shall post again when I have a pressing thought, but that doesn't happen very often.

I am wondering how I am going to break this bloody wall down and how I am going to make it over this hump

I am wondering how I am going to get all these pieces learned, especially Bach

I am wondering how much I will be able to improve on myself

I am wondering where my friend went

I am sweating the deadline of having the Ballade #1, Mozart's 576, and the Appassionata all memorized and down pat in time to do a piano festival in Italy in June.  OK, so I am not one of the recitalists, but I still have to play them for other pianists, so I don't want to look like  twit.  I am twitching because I just got asked to do a Piano and 9 other instruments thing in a month.  I am trying to figure out how I can do it all.  egad!

whether I should order two music books (beethoven and scarlatti) today...
whether or not I should start working on this mazurka (op 6/2) I'm in love with..
whether I should cut out a skirt I'm making today or wait until tomorrow..
In short, whether I should procrastinate or not. "HAHA"

Here are some things that I am wondering right now...

Is piano actually difficult, or do we just make it difficult for ourselves (and am I just stupid for not getting it better)?

Which is more inspiring, the Master or the enthusiastic beginner ?

Who expresses the highest levels of musicianship, the teacher or the student?

Does every single individual in the world deserve to have the musician in them brought out and surfaced?

I'm wondering if my parents actually are going to buy my that new PC I've been heavily coveting this Friday or Saturday.

And, not any kind of thinking issue or anything, but currently I'm just amazed by how gigantic an orchestra Havergal Brian's Symphony No. 1, "Gothic," calls for. Why would anyone need 6 flutes!!! On top of calling the largest orchestral force, it's also the longest symphony, clocking in about 10 minutes short of 2 hours. There are probably longer ones, like Sorabji's Jami Symphony, whose scores scans nearly a thousand pages. But it can be discounted, as a performance has yet to see the light of day.

No, I couldn't be.  Padantic isn't a word.  Does the fact that I know that padantic isn't a word make me pedantic? 8)

Well, about how I just erased what I had written  :-[ :-[ and about how I should stay away from this thread  ::) (sorry, sorry)

...and then about how I just put it back again, he he

The goal in playing the piano (and any instrument for that matter) is not actually about playing the piano.  It is about playing pieces/music.  We never master the instrument, we master pieces.

Can Music be mastered (I think maybe not)?  If not, then there is not a single element which can be mastered (otherwise by adding up all of the mastered elements, you would master Music- or is it just a matter of time?).  Music is not made up of single elements, it is made up of completeness.

I don't think we actually master pieces, but we get close enough to do us well.

Is this why such a thing as a technique list cannot exist?  Every technique is tailored to the music and its uniqueness and this is infinite.

We play the piano to know music.  We sing to know music.  We don't play to play, and we don't sing to sing.  Why are people drawn to a particular instrument then?  Why does it matter what instrument one chooses if the sole purpose is that of expressing music, not the instrument?

Does eternity really exist?  Music would be worth it.  (shhhh.. don't tell but we're gonna need it...  :P )

Yes, I do play to play, at least to a degree, and certainly with regard to improvisation. The physical act of playing is part of the yoga of music for me. I do not mean that I could not express something musical without it, only that for me the end and the means tend to be mixed up.

Goes to show how remarkable the human brain is to be able to conceive a meaning for "eternity". I wonder if the higher primates can perceive a glimmering notion of eternity. In fact there are numerous meanings of the word, ranging from the abstract idea of mathematical infinity applied to time to a subjective and indefinite perpetuation of consciousness.

Well, Ted, it's just that I have been thinking about a thing Bernhard posted, actually in a thread about eternity.  Talking about the finger pointing to the moon, and everybody looks at the finger.  I started thinking that my feelings about piano and my crazy pursuit of musical expression involving piano may be some form of staring at the finger vs the moon.  Does it really matter how one comes to express music?  Doesn't it matter more simply that music is expressed in whatever form it comes in?  I don't know, but probably.

I appreciate your thoughts, once again, and 'thanks' actually.

so many thoughts flit through randomly.  where should i start?  suspecting the neighbors to have taken my precious watering can (or did it blow away in the wind - being plastic)?  why is there grass in the mailbox (did my three year old do this?)  why do the neighbors lawns grow so green, and mine has to be coaxed and prodded along with tons of water, etc.  did i put too much lime in last year?  how come the only thing i can grow from seed is sunflowers?  (looking at thumb).
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

Can inadequacies ever evolve or develop into adequacies?

If "inadequacy" is capable of adequate evolution or development, I would suppose it is not "inadequate" at all.

and along those lines...

Can true nothingness ever evolve into somethingness ? (NOT talking about smallness into bigness).

Is there any such "thing" as no-thing-ness (I would think not)
