Toward the Flame: Boris Petrushansky’s Journey Through Scriabin’s Universe

Alexander Scriabin died in April 1915, at forty-three, of a fever that took him within a week — leaving his great mystical project unfinished. He left behind a piano language no one had spoken before, one that a century later still questions every interpreter who approaches it. Boris Petrushansky has spent a lifetime preparing his answer. In a new album and an extended conversation with Piano Street, he traces Scriabin’s path from the early Preludes to the final, shattering Op. 74. Read more

Good Setlist for College Auditions?
on: January 27, 2026, 05:00:54 PM
I will be auditioning for colleges this year, and I wanted to make sure my chosen pieces looked good:
Scales: C, G, Eb, Db major & A, D, Bb, F# minor
Bach: Prelude and Fugue in Eb major, WTC II
Beethoven: Pathetique Sonata mvt. 1
Chopin: Ocean Etude Op. 25 No. 12
Prokofiev: Visions Fugitives Nos. 1, 3, 8, 14

Let me know if this seems like a solid college audition set-list. If it helps, I am currently planning on auditioning at Wheaton College (Il), University of Kansas, University of Missouri Kansas City, and Wichita State, with very high hopes of attending Wheaton (if it's not too expensive after aid/scholarships).

Discipline and daily practice are essential for mastering piano, and the same idea applies to professional training. Healthcare students preparing for certification often rely on tools like a free cna practice test 2026 to review key concepts and gain confidence before taking the official exam.

Are these colleges and universities asking you to come in and audition?   That's very unusual for a non-conservatory.  They aren't even especially known for their music departments, at least in my little mind.

Perhaps your auditioning for a scholarship?

When a student applies to regular schools and demonstrates that they are a serious piano student, it only helps with their application.  I wouldn't worry too much about specific choices.  I'm sure you'll get in everywhere by playing your selected program decently well.

If you plan on attending Wheaton College, I would say your repertoire doesn't have to be extremely heavy/strict as it's not a conservatory or music-based school. For me, If I had to audition picking a Baroque piece, Classical era piece/Sonata, Romantic Era piece and Contemporary piece which I assume is how auditions are structured, this is what I would do.

Baroque Era - Bach - Busoni: Chaconne in D minor BWV 1004 (If Allowed, not much of a Baroque Era pianist)

Classical Era/Sonata - Tuff choice for me, but since its not a conservatory, maybe something a bit lighter like Mozart's Sonata in C minor K.457 or Beethoven's Sonata No. 27 in E minor, Op. 90 (1st mvmt only)

Romantic Era - Also a lot to choose from, I would go for something flashier and lively, so maybe an Etude of some sorts, I would typically choose a major key, since my last two pieces were minor keyed. But for now, Scriabin's Etude in D-Sharp Minor Op.8 No.12 sounds good. Stands out, since most people will pick Liszt or Chopin.

Contemporary - Probably something from George Crumbs Makrokosmos one to stand out or Salvatore Sciarrino's - Anamorfosi (which is really short)

Don’t think about it too much it’s fine

Just stick to it (if you’re good at playing it)
Live large, die large.  Leave a giant coffin.
