Jre, how would you say your technical abilities are at the piano as compared to mine?

....
Yeah, I agree- his head *is* incredibly bloated.
Jre would be roughly about 700000000000 times technically better than you- he can actually hit the right notes at a correct tempo. And he can play the Kapustin variations, which is totally insane, lol.
btw it amuses me greatly how you always challenge people to an etude show down- like you know your musicality is such crap you could NEVER compete with say, a chopin mazurka, schubert impromptu, or a scriabin prelude as the chosen piece.

I think he meant to ask whether you are joking about them being 'insane'.
I like that piece alot though.
Does Jre want a MUSICALITY showdown?
The reason I don't challenge people to musicality duels is because they aren't as exciting and more difficult to objectively judge, but still, I'm open to submitting a recording and polling the winner.
What piece shall we duel on?

Well, you want a technical duel? I'd be up to it.
How about Chopin etudes? Some harder ones... what are they--Op10/1,2,4,8 or Op25/6, 8, 11?
Take your pick. Does a week sound good for preparation and recording? Or do you want two weeks, a month, or whatever?

Maybe in a few years
Jre and mozartian are more in my league of experience, I've only been playing less than 5 years.

I have my own opinions, and just because I may have less experience doesn't make them less valid.
I think we, and more people on this forum, think the same way about more thinks than it would appear, alot of the debates is basically about semantics, and the confusion caused by using different words to define the same thing.
The debate over technique vs. musicality doesn't really exist to me, because both are very important issues, but I appear to be in the minority that I can appreciate both seperately and independantly from the other.
My basic philosophy is the same as others, except that specific repertoire can and SHOULD be used to play as fast as possible.
This is not to say that it will detract from the musical impact of these pieces, because the pieces which I intend for this purpose actually sound great at extreme tempos.
There has always been a 'battle' between technicians and musicians, and their appreciators, but I am merely trying to find a healthy harmony of understanding of the symbiosis of both, and the fact that they can be credibly seperated.

this type of duel would actually be more desireable. firstly, ill admit it right now. my technique isnt the greatest. also, you would fail miserably at this. we all know that you have no regard for musicality, which proves my claim, basically.

I have regard for musicality, I have never said I don't, I just have more regard than most for virtuosity for it's own sake.
Name some pieces youd learn and play for the duel.

I almost forgot that this thread was once about Lang Lang.
Let's see if all the problems can be solved at once:

Again, see above. Actually, I find your comments mildly ironic, since you were the one who both created the dueling thread and linked to it.

The Kapustin Variations are tough, but I would not expect someone who played Gaspard de la Nuit before he learned a concerto to see it the same way.

to be fair theyre not "insane" at all.
but at the end of the day it's really not technique that counts, and from his posts jre sounds like a fabulous musician, so i'm sure he would definitely beat the crap out of opus10no2 in a duel.

jre (& phil) i'd like to apologise for my disrespectful comment. it was a bit thoughtless & arrogant and i have no doubt that while i may or may not have a better technique you're probably both much finer musicians than i am.

i think he should stay away from a piano.
Quite right!
And stay away from the food as well -- he's going to eat himself into an early grave.
As a pianist, he's overrated -- and if his technique is so good, why does he simplify some of the RH arpeggiated chord passages in the last movement of the Mendelssohn concerto? (The arpeggio played with fingering 5321 instead of 3521).
