I was going through my usual bout of internet activity when I noticed a picture of a young Vladimir Ashkenazy. OMG I think he is kinda attractive - anyone agree? or had similar thoughts? She's not attractive and she can hardly be called a pianist. The only reason why people acknowledge her "musicianship" is because she is a public figure. She has about as much pianistic prowess as Richard Nixon did (who also was a pianist).

Yes... as well as teaching group lessons as well as my private students... I do work almost 30 hours a week and I'm trying to earn some money and establish my reputation in perth as a Piano teacher.
You do realise that the pieces are REALLY *** hard... and I've only been studying them for about 8 months now. And I'm hoping to perform them in September next year.

I don't know. There's something about her face that turns me off. Also, her voice. Still, she's a lot better looking than most pianists out there. Pianists really aren't an attractive bunch, come to think of it.

Of course you can always find a lot of things wrong with someone! ::) It's not even about that! ::) And maybe you should better look for nice things about people not for the things you don't like! That could make you a more attractive person yourself you know! :P Cause I'm sure looking for things you don't like about others and being mean is not attractive at all!!

No, it's just that we're young men in the prime of our sexual lives and we just have our own tastes in women. We're really no different from most other men in the age range of 18-30. And besides, you have to admit, pianists on the whole really aren't the most attractive people, when you compare it to other people. There are some pretty cute musicians who play other instruments, you know.

I have to say, though, if I had to date a pianist, it would probably be Yuja Wang. She looks a lot better than she sounds, and I am usually not one for Asians. She's also almost exactly my age, too.

To me, attractive pianist aren't really a big deal. I already decided that if I want to go the artist route that I wouldn't ever be with another artist cause, someone would die.

Sure, there are exceptions, but this has been the case in many of my experiences. I strive to find attractive pianists, with all that said.

Personally, I would close my eyes if I ever attended a concert by a VERY(EXTREMELY) attractive woman.
If not, TBH I would certainly spend the whole time watching her rather than listening to the music she makes.

I can see how that, could be really really true...although I just want to say that first hand (my mom's an artist) that sometimes artist really need something down to earth to remind them Yes, we have to stay here in this apartment. No, we can not travel the world in an RV now, although when we have the finances we'll see. Dear, did you remember to pay the water bill?...stuff like that. But, I get the whole "understanding" thing as well. I'm not trying to argue I'm just presenting another perspective.

To me Lise de la Salle looks like a 5 year old boy. Same with Grimaud. French women just have a very brittle, boyish look to them. A bit of a turnoff. Lola Astanova isn't bad, though.

this thread's fun...yeah i can see the thumbs up for a young agerich...emma watson? really? i mean she's not attractive but for me at least the appeal's not there, maybe if she put on a wee bit more weight, she looks a little waify and although sort of pretty, more in a plain sort of way.
i'm not particular gunning for the lovley asian ladies, there just happens to be a lot pretty asian pianists performing out and about now so by numbers they're getting more honerable mentions at the moment

Why has no one mentioned Angela Hewitt? :-\ While she is not in her twenties, I'm sure there are enough members on Pianostreet of a more mature age that would find a lady of that age attractive. Besides, as is obvious from Hewitt's publicity pictures and CD covers, she is someone who exhumes confidence in her appearance.

we might both have to check our sources if you are quoting definite evidence then i stand corrected however just throwing out there 'shopped' is asinine. to the best of my knowledge that was an official press release photo of her years ago, she is very pretty even now at her current age. many times pianists will have their PR people keep older photos of them in their better years for various reasons. i made no statement that it was a 'now' of her, just that she is a beautiful lady. all the other official pictures of her point to this being authentic again if you had seen otherwise and proof of a fake that i didn't come across, then my apologies but it lines up with the other album images and others of her

no i don't think it has to be a 'classical ' pianist per se, take the debated shot of above where someone was crying shopped....she's a brazilian jazz composer singer and pianist and steinway artist (there are many in the list, i.e. Harry Connick Jr is a steinway artist but more of a jazz musician)

Well, that explains why she is so attractive. I have never seen a female classical pianist that has been that attractive, no matter what the age is. For being 51 years old, wow, that's impressive.

With vocalists that seems to be the norm. Even vocalists in universities take those kinds of glamour shots for CDs, recitals, etc. Also, vocalists tend to be more attractive, anyways. Pianists just for the most part aren't much to look at.

Most women here in Sweden only know about him since he is "that goodlooking Swedish pianist" they don´t care about his piano playing at all.

DG knows that both youth and sex sell. They really don't care so much about talent, obviously (but I won't go into that in this thread).
Yes, that's very true. When listening to music, I'm quite good at picking up wrong notes and technical points. However, I find it a lot more difficult to distinguish pianists who have mastered all that. I'll probably not have the musicality to do that even after another 10 years of study.
On the other hand, my male instinct quickly tells me that Alice Sara Ott is attractive. Is that why I have bought 2 of her CDs?

Perhaps you could, although on quite what grounds and using quite what parameters you or anyone else might attempt to do this is less clear than mud; it's also rather difficult to play the piano when in bed (or so I'm told), so even the motivation to do such a thing is equally unclear.

if only she were shopped, then she'd at least have a good excuse, unfortunately that's not a release photo with touch up normally seen it's from the universe pageant itself (aka the malnourishment promenade)...all of those girls at that level are ultra underfed, pretty, but in dire need of a few peanut butter sandwiches.

Wow! Thanks for posting that. That was highly entertaining and very well done! I liked the eye candy in the background (Violinist). I thoroughly enjoyed that, but I have to say that pic of her in that gold dress and that position she is doing looks cheap and not attractive! Not a good use of a piano for a prop in this instance. Maybe a stripper pole would have been better.

i suppose i should have gone with another one but that one had a piano so i was like meh...interestingly they weren't pushing the sex as much with her early on but definately when her bikini and lingerie modeling and lad mag shoots hit it's been that way since (she's an FHM girl too i def won't post those but you can google image that stuff if anyone's so inclinded..), now she's doing all sorts ofendoresments in the UK (nails, she's Pantene ProVs new face, clohtes, etc) . i'll promptly remove the quesionable phot of her.

I first heard of her from watching a BBC charity reality show. She seemed a very pleasant person. Rather sad that she decided to market herself through compromising photos.

I don´t think that people would have considered them very goodlooking today, many of the greatest pianostars in the past have been pretty bad looking by todays standards like Rachmaninov, Horowitz, Godowsky, Rubinstein and even Liszt.
These days we have Kissin, Andsnes, Pogorelich and Peter Jablonski.
Lang Land can also be considered very good looking if you like the Asian look.

WHY is it so important these days for a female musician, esp. violinists, to have a photograph of themselves on whatever cover or poster that looks like ti has been shot for Playboy? The capacity to undulate accross the picture is not what playing whatever they play is about!
Not that I object to a nice and good photograph; the one of Grimaud here looks quite good indeed (as does she). But I have heard too many performances of 'cute' or whatever performers that jarred my ears to care much what the performer looks like. I am going to a concert to bathe my ears, not my eyes (barring opera).

WHY is it so important these days for a female musician, esp. violinists, to have a photograph of themselves on whatever cover or poster that looks like ti has been shot for Playboy? The capacity to undulate accross the picture is not what playing whatever they play is about!
Not that I object to a nice and good photograph; the one of Grimaud here looks quite good indeed (as does she). But I have heard too many performances of 'cute' or whatever performers that jarred my ears to care much what the performer looks like. I am going to a concert to bathe my ears, not my eyes (barring opera).
I think that you're right about female violinists being especially affected (afflicted?), the perhaps ironcial aspect of this is that some of them are really fine musicians and splendid players too - Hahn, Benedetti, Ibragimova...

Well, neither of them is Bruno Canino, for sure (think about that - and specifically about his duo partnership with his compatriot Antonia Ballista that at one time encouraged some to dub the duo "Cannon and Ball"); give me "kitten on the keys" (said to be a literal English translation of Sorabji's title Opus Clavicembalisticum - think about it for a moment) any day and, while so doing, do please also bear in mind the fact that, as the cliché has it, "dogs have masters: cats have servants".

I'd like to be with another artist because when you are as serious an artist as I am, artists are the only people that can stand you, and the only people you can stand are artists. Sure, there are exceptions, but this has been the case in many of my experiences. I strive to find attractive pianists, with all that said.
Essentially this.
As for attractive musicians... Valentina Lisitsa isn't bad looking at all, looking on the female side. That she appears to be a cool person to hang out with judging from interviews and such also adds to this. And as Birba mentioned earlier, on the male side, Boris Berezovsky has a certain charm.
EDIT: Oh, and if we aren't looking at just classical pianists, I'd also like to throw AMANDA PALMER in there.

Well if Littletune is just a kid I can perfectly understand her reluctance. When you watch TV nowadays, most images of kids are pixellated. We live in a dangerous world indeed.
Actually, images of kids are only pixelated in the United States if there is a crime scene, as far as I know. I see kids with their faces visible all the time on the news.

I know it might sound strange but I am more and more losing all my interest in that sex/male/female stuff. I see of course that there are attractive people around, and I still hear that "voice" of yearning and perhaps wanting to be "with a woman" someday again when it's really time, but the visual impact distracts me and confuses me and I am not feeling like a free person anymore, so I try to ignore it and keep a distance from it as good as I can.

When I was younger it was only looks that interested me. Years have taught me that there is so much more than looks and a warm heart and the ability to cook is far more important.

P.S. We both are struggling with a difficult piece: you the FI, me the Rev (and Prokofiev too, but in tiny bits: no more than a bar, even half a bar at time... I'll be "old, and grey, and full of sleep" when I'll be finished, if ever!!!); let's keep on encouraging each other!! Your example has helped me a lot...

I consider you a real friend, too, along with some of the others you mentioned. Some of the other ones I don't know well enough to say that because I've only seen some of their posts. I haven't been a member that long, only since Dec. My friends here are you, Birba, AJ, Kyle and Littletune.
Well, the last few days, I've spent trying to learn how to do those tension relieving exercises that Birba talked about in his video. He says I'm not getting it, though, and he thinks it's not possible to teach over the internet. So I'm back to practicing FI, working on the descending passage of bar 7 - 8 in triplets but practicing it with some tension relieving method (don't know if I'm describing this correctly!). I hope I do better at this than at the Italian technique! :(
I spend far too much on this forum too, especially during the day time but at night, I usually practice more and only visit during breaks. Still, it's probably too much time here but it's addicting and fun.

That's not been the case for many years! Those who can remember steam trains will recollet this, of course, but British trains have run on diesel or electricity for a very long time now, as surely you know!
These days, choo choo signifies someone who can actually afford a pair of prohibitively expensive shoes.

no it's hugh jackman at bondi beach, i only know this becuase as a trainer with one foot in the physique enhancement world and since i tend to stay in 'beach shape' for most of the year myself, i used to get tons of , "what do i need to do in order to looke like hugh jackman in this photo....", so i immediately knew who it was since i have had more conversations on what needs to be done to get into that kind of shape with clients than i care to count.

bob i would be doing you a dis-service and pretty much lying to you with a side of BS if i said anything other than, that is a very complex question and truth be told the answer is really going to be different for just about everyboby. things like chronological age, androgen status, adrenalcorticoid levels, sleep, insulin sensitivity, stress management, food tolerance, training age, current fitness level, programing, are just the pre requisite info i would need before being able to even begin to talk about actual training and dietary methodologies. even things like the season and how far north or south you are have an impact (i.e. access to regular direct strong sun exposure as this affects blood level of active vitamin d3 (1,25 di-hydroxycholecalciferol, which in turn will affect many of the aspects listed above).
the short answer that no one likes to hear? you need to start out actually being hugh jackman.
as for simply being more trim and stronger with some more muscle, it's really the boring sh*t no one likes to focus on becuase it's damn unsexy, but i really is the most effective, a clean no nonsense diet high in protein and veggies, some fruit now and then, limit starchy carbs to meals right around the time you workout, moderate fat intake compsosed mainly of saturated and mono saturated fats and some omega 3 as little omega 6 as possible, 9 hours average sleep per night, manage stress, etc. a simple strength and conditionign program around lifitng heavy weights a few times per week with some mild cardiovascualr activity here and there. that sort of thing.

i won't go into my treatise on all things stupid regarding the mythology surrounding muscular development but i will sucker punch the undying faulty logic that is workout=muscle='muscle bound'=stiff unflexible schmuck who can't even scatch their backside....
i am actualy in argument FOR a more than mild fitness and bodybuilding approach to for musicians but we just need to be smart about certain things.
1. we must pay super careful attention to strength and muscle imabalance, that is we must be very vigilent on working opposing and antagonist movements equally or counter to existing over use (so like for men, who love to do many bench pressing movements, they should be doing pull ups and rowing movements like crazy to make sure and develop the rear kinetic chain musculature enough that posture is maintained otherwise you get a tightness in the front from too much anterior work and this actually pulls the shoulders forward and down. a big no no that WILL affect your playing among other things.).
2. we must address the fact that we as pianists don't have the luxury of playing while standing, so when your are sitting for many hours per day (this includes when you sit for non piano too), this is a very unatural thing to do as far as how we are put together and our bodies just do not like it. you are essentially havingyour hips out of plane relative to the midline of the body BUT unlike a natural movement when this would be accompompanied by a lengthening of the hamstrings and a counter contraction of your quads, we have a bent leg at 90 degrees so the hamstring is in a shortened position for a very long time, with little to no quad activation. what happens over time is that a progressive shortening of the hamstring will begin to pull on the lower hips where they insert at the pelvis, this begin to shift the 'hip area' into an anterior til, and since the top end is connected to all sorts of goodies, i.e. your back muscle insert and attach in the upstairs area, it begins to pull on the lower back muscles. this is the classic cause of a lat of people with low back problems and why many of them injure themselves when they bend over to pick something up off the ground incorrectly (they attempt to lengthed an already length back muscle and since hams are tight, boom, pulled x,y,z). so we need to make sure and work MORE the hip and hamstring muscles to help counter act this tendency (i.e. lots of deadlifts, springting, squating, etc.).
3. we need to pay attention to hand and forearm health (this is a way long topic so i'll just leave it at that, i'll only say that from experience i make it a point not to go super uber heavy and deadlift more than 285 lbs or approx 130 kg close to a performance or too often as this will definately have some collateral tightness in the hands that can affect your playing but it is temporary. and still there are ways to train heavy while keeping in mind our need to relaxed hands and arms)
4. i am not entirely conviced stretching is absolutely neccesary (but it can help some). if you are working themuscles through a FULL range of motion and are addressing the balance issues i mentioned up top, flexibility will come on its own.-
i could go on and on but these are just some issues we can and need to address that actually make 'bodybuilding' good and necessary for our art.
also consider this thread. at the end of the day we as performers should want to put our best selves in front of our audience, we're there for them, part of that enjoyable live performance is a complete package, composed confident, competant musical playing, and when possible look your best. all things being equal, human nature is pretty much dominant and attractive and fit and musical is going to be more enjoyable vs frumpy/unattractive and flabby and musical. generally speaking of course.

sometimes i wonder how some people even get hired as trainers, most couldn't pass a basic anatomy exam, let alone properly and safely train clients, i hope for you you have one of the few good ones. most of the time i see the trainers and pros where i workout and just shake my head and laugh.
i don't take clients anymore, i got tired of people not listening to me then getting upset that they were not getting the results they wanted. i prefer to work with competitive athletes vs general people that just want to get in shape, and truth be told i just more concerned with my down development for now so i just focus on my training, my music, my studies....i still help friends now and then but it's case by case,rare, and i usually require some kind of audition. ;D
btw if if your trainer has you doing stupid stuff on a bosu ball for 'core activation' tell them to stop it have you do something useful. i thinking my pooh i flush down the toilet has more training common sense than the people who make poor clients suffer through such useless rubbish.

indeed, defintely not something to write home to my mother about, truth be told i think im just put together to really max out on relative strength (i.e as a percentage of my bodyweight) vs absolute. that is i can easily move 2x or more of my of my total bodyweight but i don't weigh much so big heavy dudes still push more iron than i ever could in some cases. lol

Lots of Finnish composers writing music today. You may like Kalevi Aho's Piano Concerto No. 2, which, even though it is undoubtedly modern, will not scare away conservatives such as yourself. The piano writing is very Brahmsian.

i have always liked his playing and i am a big big fan of paco de lucia and flamenco style guitar and dance music so when this jazzy transcription got uploaded i was incredibly happy. i listen to it all the time.
i think he just wrapped up or is inthe process of finishing dma studies at unt under vladimir viardo. it is a great piano program and he is one of the guys to study with there.

lol seriously, i'm no where near good enough or disciplined enough to be one on paper. i am a card carrying living room and practice room concert pianist though. normally i just end up playing for my dogs or messing with a vocal student in the next room (i.e. playing with their tonal center since the place isn't very well insulated)

This is one of the most inane threads I've ever read, but it does prove a point I've made for quite some time now regarding ability vs. looks. These days one doesn't have to truly be able to play very well. If the marketing is there and a stylist can do a little something with your face, then you're on your way. I always find myself laughing at those who claim "it's not about her/his looks", or, "gosh, I didn't even notice that she was beautiful". Please. The only reason you bothered was because of his/her looks...just admit it.

several reasons but the main one is just a numbers game. way more pretty girls in the pool it seems. not hating on the dudes but even if i were to search, i just don't have a very well tuned 'guy-dar' i just see a dude, hard for me to distinguish good looking vs no so good looking dude. probably some type ofvision problem similar to color blindness maybe, i'm maleblind perhaps?....
probably counts as decent looking enough i suppose.

Not only that, it's no small matter of surprise not only that the orchestra has returned to its long chequered existence but that a woman might conduct it there; the attitudes of the current Iranian régime (that's to say the one since the 1979 Islamic revolution) towards the study and performance of what one might loosely term "Western classical music" in Iran, whilst having been harsher at some times than at others, has hardly ever been what members here would think to regard as any kind of proud record...

So what, I have been to rock concerts. I have seen girls collect empty water bottles that He used and threw away during the concert. Then they filled these bottles up again and drank, in a state of euphoria. (Unfortunately he had a bad cold, so a lot of his fans also got this cold this way.)
I have also seen a girl catching a very small piece of fluff emerging from a scarf that the Artist waved, and after the concert she proudly showed it as a souvenir to the rest of us. I understand this hug thing and all that, but this ... I was like "eeeh ..." :-[ BTW she was not a girl, she was an adult. Made it even more embarrassing.
Besides, this thread seems to be about the usual, guys checking hot babes out, so I think I withdraw again. Piano, huh? Being good at piano playing is THE sexiest thing, that's my opinion. I also wonder why female pianists are supposed to expose as much skin as possible, while a man is supposed to expose as little as possible ...

Personally I find many of the "hot babes" here just look like pouty pubescent bimbos. I'd just as soon see a truly beautiful artist with class, experience and style, whether from the present of the past. Think Maria Tipo, Imogen Cooper, young Alicia de Larrocha (she never really stopped being attractive though IMO the big glasses and hairstyle in later life did her no favour). There will be many more examples, no skin or short dresses required. Maybe an idea for another, non-sexist thread :)

I must confess that I'd not thought of that! I do not share Thal's wholly deprecatory view of her but, as I think I may have mentioned previously, I find that she just doesn't engage me and draw me into what she plays, as with Hélène Grimaud, so listening to her is almost always a disspiriting experience - everything sounds just so much too ordinary and uninvolved and uninvolving. Try listening, for example, to her playing Rachmaninov's Third Concerto and then, after a suitable pause, Argerich doing the same...
I'm inclined to heavily agree. It's odd, I intuitively never felt overwhelmingly attracted to Rachmaninov 3rd in some ways. Several days ago I listened to Argerich play it, and that made things change, I'm quite inclined to now add that music to my to do list.

Irrational in terms of attractiveness and innate ability to play piano. I find it more settling avoid thinking about her at all. I have not formed an opinion of her playing yet, which is somewhat embarrassing given that she does play a fair amount of Scriabin. But I doubt it would be what I'd like it to be.

For the record, I can tell you that I happend to have heard for the first time a number of the pianists cited in this seemingly interminable and even more tiresome thread in recordings and/or radio broadcasts in which, obviously, I was unable to see what they look like. For the record and for example, were I to have seen pictures of Martha Argerich before or after hearing her play, I see no obvious reason why that would have made - or been expected to make - the slightest difference to my reactions to her playing...
