Johann Sebastian Bach: WTC 1

Each of the two volumes of the Well-tempered Clavier contains one prelude and one fugue in every major and minor key. Often called “the 48”, or the “Old Testament” of piano music (the new being Beethoven’s sonatas) it is perhaps the most important keyboard work of all time, and something that every pianist and every composer must tackle in one way or another – Chopin’s obvious allusion to the C major prelude BWV 846 in his Study Op. 10 no 1 is but one illustration of this.
The preludes are very varied in style and often deal with a specific technical feature, while the fugues are remarkable for their wide range of contrapuntal techniques and modes of expression.
The title suggests that Bach intended a well-tempered tuning system which gives a single instrument the ability to play in all 24 keys.
The opposing system in Bach´s day was meantone temperament in which keys with many accidentals sound out of tune.

xx Easy preludes of the WTC
December 31, 2009, 08:34:11 AM by bachfanatic

Hi, everybody !

I'm an intermediate player. I'm very fond of the music of J.S. Bach. I would like to play some parts of the WTC. I've already played some preludes of Book 1. Fugues are too hard for me now. Here's what I played :

Prelude in C (of course)
Prelude in C minor
Prelude and Fugue in D (the only fugue I played)
Prelude in Eb minor
Prelude in G
Prelude in G minor

I'm not completely satisfied with C minor and G : I don't play them fast enough.

The fugue in D major is very sloppy.

I know there is a list on the forum which give an order of difficulty, but it is especially for the fugues, not for the preludes.

Do you know some others preludes around the same level I could play ? I have tried the fugues, but they're a nightmare to play !

Thank you in advance.

xx What do you think of Richter playing Das Wohltemperierte Klavier?
June 13, 2009, 05:24:27 PM by lelle

Hello!
I recently got the complete WTK book 1 recorded by Richter, and I have to say it is the best set of recordings I have ever been able to find of this amazing work. I really enjoy his work with the sound/moods/textures, and his contrapunctual playing is amazing.

Have you heard these recordings, and what do you think of them? Are they the definite WTK recordings, or are there better out there (personally I don't give much for Gould)?

If you haven't heard them, a lot of the recordings can be found in a playlist on YouTube, http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=9152C783D22D5468

What customers said about pianostreet.com:

"All of my students are members of Pianostreet and many of my teacher colleagues have joined as well.
It is an excellent resource for students and teachers alike and there is very rarely any need to visit another website or music store in search of sheet music."

Andrea Boltresz, piano teacher

"As a frequent user of pianostreet.com I find it easy to navigate, great value for money and very professional. The pieces are all well-graded and the audio is really useful, especially for pieces not heard before. I have recommended the site to many of my friends who play the piano. Keep up the good work."

Paul, Llansannan, UK.

"Wonderful service! [...] I have no reservation in recommending it as a “must” to all pianists, both teachers and students, amateur and professional."

Dr. Robert J Keane, pianist

"I was in Poland the past summer to give 2 concerts. At the last minute they requested some Chopin, which I had not brought with me. So, I google-searched for classical downloads and found your site. I was able to print out excellent editions of the pieces I needed within minutes. To find the scores locally would have been inpossible as it was a smaller town, the nearest music store 45 minutes away."

Robert York, pianist
Long Beach, California

"Piano Street has been a wonderful tool to me as both a pianist and a piano teacher. I can browse the collection for pieces I want to play and/or have my students play. The difficulty rating system that Piano Street uses enables me to search by difficulty level for pieces at my students' various playing levels. It is helpful that many of the scores include an audio clip of the piece being played. I have recommended to my advanced students that they also join Piano Street since getting sheet music from there is a much less expensive alternative to ordering and paying for the music.
