xx Hanon Exercises
May 30, 2011, 09:18:02 PM by hawkranger

Hey guys how is everyone??
hope u are all doing great

Ok i was having some trouble with my left hand as it get tired easily but right now i can push little by little and am noticing some improvement

The questions are:
1. Should i play hanon with as much strength as i can in each finger ??
like should i try with each finger to get the highest sound possible??
cause when i try doing that my left hand get tired really fast

2. How many hours a day should i dedicate to hanon in your opinion?
right now according to mood some times i go for 2 hours and sometimes i only play 15 min with out stopping at all but after that my left hand is kinda useless xD am having trouble typing with my left hand now after finishing a 20 min straight only exercise 1 and 2 starting at 60 tempo about 4 times without stopping then 66 tempo about 2 times and finally 71 about 2 times xD
it is not much but my left hand couldn't handle all that at first
so i think it is getting better right?Huh
hope to hear what u think about this Smiley
thanx alot for the info
takecare all

xx Hanon Exercise #1 extreme left hand stress
May 23, 2011, 08:34:38 PM by hawkranger

Hey guys how r u all?
ok i have been playing keyboards for nearly 6 years now with my band but never practiced properly so when i decided to get started i found that i should start with Hanon book
and here when i started the #1 exercise my right hand was as expected can do the exercise at 108 tempo from first try
but the left hand after going throw exercise #1 two times at tempo of 60 i felt extreme stress and as expected "i think" the pinky and ring fingers are extremely weak
is this normal or maybe am doing something wrong with my left hand
i checked couple of vids on youtube to see the positioning and how the left hand work it seemed pretty normal to me but 2 times and i already had to stop for about 30 sec to try again and then 2 times and 30 sec rest
is this normal??
thanx for the info Smiley

I've gotten different opinions about this, and I'd like to know which is better to improve technical skills. Thanks.

xx Scales/Hanon vs practicing passages from rep
December 25, 2010, 08:03:14 AM by rombusempire

Hi all,

I have read a lot of the posts regarding Hanon vs no Hanon. I am basically seeing that it is a half and half, but teh ones that are anti hanon are opting for scales, arpeggios, etc.

I have read some articles that technique exercises (even scales) are a waste of time because that same time can be beter spent on the difficult passages as the skills learned from technique exercises do not carry over 100% to teh peices but   using passages in a peice will carry over 100% to that peice, as well as other peices.

While all this theory is interesting, I woudl relaly like to know one thing...do professional concert pianists do any significant work on scales, arpeggios, Hanon, etc? Or do they only use difficult passages in teir peices for technical improvements?

Thanks
Paul

xx So.. About Hanon
October 01, 2010, 05:19:33 AM by vincentl

I know this topic is already discussed too much, but I feel like I like Hanon's exercises. I need a little advice on this because I am a little worried; I spend 30 - 45 minutes on Hanon and scales, but does Hanon's exercises do more harm than good? I still play it musically though, being aware of staccato, legato, etc. Will it be alright to do some exercises of Hanon if I keep it that way?

April 11, 2010, 02:49:03 PM by roseli

hi, can someone tell me what's the number of the exercise in the image? I bought the book, but I can't find it there, and my copy doesn't have that information... and is from a different edition.
thank you.

question Hanon Help.
April 07, 2010, 06:57:58 PM by fortissimo4

I don't know if I'm doing the Hanon Exercise correctly, well, I know I am doing it correctly what I mean to say is, my 5th finger is always so high up, and I do not want to develop bad habits. For bad habbits will be hard to correct later on, to give you a mental visual of what my 5th finger looks like while I'm doing the Hanon. For example imagine a male drinking tea "Pinky's out"... Is how my 5th finger is all the time. If this is wrong, please do tell me what I can do to condition myself to STOP doing that.

Thank You.

xx pro-hanon vs anti-hanon
December 18, 2008, 02:02:07 AM by ptyrrell

I'm am sure this topic has been discussed before but I wanted to throw it out there of who is pro-hanon and who is anti-hanon and why?

Personally I discarded hanon for a couple of years, where before I was playing hanon exercises as warm-ups.  I am not sure why but I have gone back to them but I have started going through the exercises slowly, HS as part of my practice routine.  I know they don't have a great deal of musical value,  I believe if approached in the right way can build endurance and finger strength.

Cheers

xx Hanon and frustration
May 27, 2008, 05:08:34 AM by 8426

concerning hanon, am i supposed to only practice it slow? or should i play it at tempo? also,  i get super mad and frustrated at myself...i can't get the dexterity required in the sonata of mozar k 545 in the first movement...and then when i see people younger than i am playing it better it all goes down....i hate myself...i practice from four to six hours a day and still...i just don't seem to be advancing. also i'm learning violin. does violin impede piano? can someone give me some advice? how should i practice piano? scales, hanon, czerny, in what order? should i concentrate on one piece each day?

"I was in Poland the past summer to give 2 concerts. At the last minute they requested some Chopin, which I had not brought with me. So, I google-searched for classical downloads and found your site. I was able to print out excellent editions of the pieces I needed within minutes. To find the scores locally would have been inpossible as it was a smaller town, the nearest music store 45 minutes away."

"Piano Street has been a wonderful tool to me as both a pianist and a piano teacher. I can browse the collection for pieces I want to play and/or have my students play. The difficulty rating system that Piano Street uses enables me to search by difficulty level for pieces at my students' various playing levels. It is helpful that many of the scores include an audio clip of the piece being played. I have recommended to my advanced students that they also join Piano Street since getting sheet music from there is a much less expensive alternative to ordering and paying for the music.
