Classical cd recommendations for a newbie

Hi all,new to the forum,and pretty much new to the piano.I came to the piano through my love of Tom Waits and some jazz in particular Thelonious Monk..

The thing is ive been able to live 41 years without listening to hardly any classical music,and frankly i don't  know where to start..I personally like music considered intense and dronish (right word?) but still with a strong melody,musicians like David Eugene Edwards,Velvet Underground,Will Olden,Neil Young and of course Waits & Monk..

The only classical ive heard are the obvious pieces, which i found a little to "nice" or to big Orchestra's etc..

I'm hoping to educate myself to classical piano music solo or small group,and basically want some advice where to start baring in mind my taste , i'm guessing this would be later composers??

You'll find things you like.

In my humble opinion, the best pieces for you to begin your listening experience with are (including additionally a couple of concerti):


Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (you might even check out Jacques Loussier's jazz trio arrangement of it) OR Prelude and Fugue in C Major (Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I)

Mozart - Sonata in A Major, K331

Beethoven - Sonata in c# minor, Op. 27 no. 2 "Moonlight"

Chopin - Ballade no. 1 in G Minor

Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2

Rachmaninov - Piano concerto no. 2 in c minor

Prokofiev - Piano concerto no. 3 in C Major

Hi all tks for the replies very helpful..

I watched a few You Tubes of each recommendation,obviously not enough to appreciate them fully,but i found Debussy,Chopin,Rachmaninoff & Liszt the most interesting..Also i watched Arturo Michelangeli perform Debussy La Fille aux cheveux de lin, which i absolutely loved..

Are there composers that the words stark or primitive would apply?

Once again thks for the advice..I've really landed on my feet discovered Erik Satie,i will progress from there,theres a few post on Satie and similar composers..andy
